And today's useless tidbit Coiled spring mattresses were not made until after barbed wire. The machinery to make barbed wire enabled the manufacture of spring mattresses. Prior to that all mattresses were stuffed, typically with horsehair, rushes, reeds or wool. Handing chickens a frozen mouse results in them giving you the old evil eye and a distinct feeling that you might be on their menu if you were just a touch smaller or not moving so fast.
