Hey gang,

I managed to pinch a nerve in my lower back. Saw a massage therapist, and she thinks the main cause is a combination of different muscle groups being seriously tight from all my training. Any recommendations besides chiropractic and massage to help me get back in the swing of things?

Obviously go and see a doctor if it's bad.

You can try your own massage using a foam roller and some hockey balls. I can't leave link to it now but someone else might.

Also follow normal injury management. Don't overstress it while healing and make sure your posture is good.

Actually, keeping good posture is extremely painful right now. I have survived the last few days mostly by lying down a lot. Today was the most time I have spent vertical since Wednesday. I have a foam roller, so I may do some rolling here soon. Thanks for the reminder on that. Other than that I have been icing off and on. If it persists beyond tomorrow, I am going to a doctor.

I'd see an actual doctor rather than a chiro- I just don't put much stock in them.  They believe everything can be healed with spinal manipulation and the reality is your muscles hold your body in alignment- or dis-alignment.  So you can adjust till the cows come home- but until you start addressing the muscles pulling things out of wack- you aren't going to win.

I went through a pain like that two weeks ago- sitting up right was the worst thing ever- I had to leave work and go home and just laid down in bed.  Was much better with just resting it- had it continued I would have been straight to the Dr's office for a muscle relaxer and referral to a specialist   Despite how much we can beat our bodies up- our backs are very fragile- I definitely wouldn't mess around with it.

I'd see a sports doc and a sports related physical therapist.

I wouldn't treat any back issue alone or with just a massage therapist.  Could be a lot of different things.  Experience with my own stuff (ancient), spousal unit's back stuff (recent), friends' back things (recent), and a trainer's back thing (recent) - you need a doc and a PT to figure out exactly what it is and to treat it.  Most back things come either from acute injury and/or an undiagnosed form issue.  As much as you swear you don't have a form issue or weakness, you probably do.  A really good sports related PT will get you back on track AND help correct what's wrong.

I AM going the distance

'Cause all I wanna do is go the distance. Nobody's ever gone the distance with Creed, and if I can go that distance, you see, and that bell rings and I'm still standin', I'm gonna know for the first time in my life, see, that I weren't just another bum from the neighborhood.

I actually figured out while on the massage table what I did, and it was a form issue in my shoulder press.

As far as Dr vs Chiro goes, depends on how good your Chiro is. Just like MDs there are good one and bad ones. I have met some really stupid doctors in my time. I have also met a bad chiropractor. A good chiropractor knows that you need to take care of the muscles as well as readjusting the spine. Otherwise you will just get pulled back out. It is not uncommon for Chiros to skip telling people this. My Chiro has made sure I am keenly aware of the relationship. :)

On a side note, back is much better. I can still feel a little, but it was god enough for me to go workout last night. I didn't do the entire routine. I skipped what I thought would aggravate my back, but still got an ok workout in. Today, I don't feel any worse for having doing so.

Thanks for all the thoughts.

I will agree with Spider-Dan's doc vs chiro statement.  Sometimes you need thing to get mashed back into place for the muscles to relax so you can do damage control and chiropracters are great for that.  If it is really serious then old schools docs may be needed.  Any practicioner is biased towards their modality so that can be an issue.  Which is why you never see a surgeon unless you absolutely have to!

As a side note, I am becoming a firm believer in Black Cherry juice and Turmeric/Papayin pills to reduce inflamation.  Seems to be doing the trick in getting my foot to come back online for running.

I have never heard of this. Any links for more details, BV?

Tumeric is usually a season/spice (in the ginger family).  IF you check out detox ingredients- it's usually on the list.  It's great for lots of things for "cleansing"  My friend took it to help clear out a massive ingrown hair (like maybe off to the DR to have it taken care of massive) and she wound up not having too with a combination of Tumeric and warm compress/epison salts.  I'm a firm believer in homeopathic remedies- people survived for years without modern "western" medicine.  (That being I have no issue using a regular doctor really- I just believe that there are a lot of things we overlook that do have beneficial properties)
