Army Tape

Recommended Posts

Not really a woot since it is required of us but I got weighed and taped today. In my quest to prove the Army height/weight/tape test is flawed I am getting closer. Over the past 4 months I have only lost 6 net lbs but I have lost 3 inches off my waste. Mainly because I have lost fat and gained muscle. I am currently 244 lbs at 6'3". A full 32 lbs over what the Army requires of me yet I still made tape. I also have a 17 inch neck but still the results skew against muscular guys. When you have broader shoulders and a more pornounced V-shape you obliques will naturally be bigger. When I get home I will jump in a Bodpod and show that I am really in the 15% body fat range rather then the 21% the army says I am at. Oh well. But I guess woot for passing the Army Height weight test.

The Army tape test is for people that do not fall within the required hieght to weight standard of the Army. At 6'3" the Army requires me to be at 212 lbs. I weigh 244 lbs. as of my last weigh in. This means I am 32 lbs overweight. But since this test does not factor in large framed or muscluar people they came up with the Tape test. It is just a standard BMI test that they convert to extimate body fat. They measure your neck at Adam's apple level against your waste at belly button level. The problem is there are soldiers that can pass the Army PT test but fail the tape test b/c 1. they have a tiny neck or 2. they have a broad torso. So I have a 21% body fat percentage according to the Army but when I get measured at the university of Hawaii I am around 16%. This is a big deal because it has career implications.
