emh802
So I have found I have a free fall break, I attend school in Rome and have realized I haven't traveled around Italy itself that much.I have been to Cinque Terre, Florence (bleh), and Naples/Pompeii/Sorrento. Does anyone have any great places I should go see? ( Quote Link to comment
Siha
Have you been to Sicily yet? Southern Italy is gorgeous. (I was really fond of Palermo and Giardini Naxos.) Bleh to Florence, really? Have you explored the Tuscan countryside at all? There are so many old medieval villages to see and explore! Quote Link to comment
Wandern
Just got back from a trip across the pond. My favorite was Ravenna, Italy. Great if you like mosaics without the crowds. We stayed in the town of Abano Terme, which is a thermal spa town from Roman times. It would make a great base to explore the Euganean Hills - hiking, small towns, that sort of thing. I've also spent some time in the Dolomites. Bolzano is a neat town, and the Ice Man museum is great. Trieste is off the beaten path. Castle Miramare, mosaics in Aquilea, another castle in Montfalcone. You can get out into the Karso (Karst) if you're into geology at all. Italy has so much - hard to choose where to start! MissMormie
I really loved the monastry at Monte Casino. In fact to me it was better than Vatican city. Part of this was not knowing what we were going to see but still it was amazing. The monastry got bombed in ww2 and completely rebuild since then. It's a really nice offset from all the old churches. Also it's on top of a hill with a great view were you can go for a walk as well. The church accompanying this monastry is the real gem. The colours are extremely vibrant. It basically looks like someone scrubbed all the centuries of ashes and dirt of the ceilings of the varican. For me this was easily the best part of my trip to Italy. But part of thatwas without doubt not knowing what we were going to see.
