The alignment of Celsius and Fahrenheit.

Recommended Posts

This morning when I left for work, it was -16F / -26C. But the windchill? The windchill was -40 in both scales, and that tickled me.

I'm one of those people who gets amused at things that right-minded folks stress about. Chicago is a beautiful city, even in weather like this.

You step outdoors and by the time you inhale your first breath, your beard is frozen. Like wrinkle your nose and you can feel the oil on your beard crack because it's already ice. Then, if you're out for more than 30 seconds, your clothes get so cold that when you step back into shelter, your body can't quite warm up because it's touching this frigid fabric.

The drifting snow on the roads means that even if it's plowed you have to keep your eye as far down the road as you can so you can brake before you get to the snow patch that you'll have no traction on because someone else already spun out and wrecked, so everyone will slow down.

And apparently the Chicago emergency services are pleading for people to stay at home if possible so the roads can be as clear as possible for emergency vehicles to do their work.

But, the trains and buses are still running, if 10 minutes delayed. The city lives. =)

And my little Jetta diesel started right up with zero effort this morning. VW has really engineered an impressive piece of technology in that thing.

Here's to the laughable extremes mother nature brings us. =)

Oh lawdy. That sucks.

Glad we've got shelter, though; they only had one warming center open through the night last night. >.<

Haha I just saw this post...I saw the Celsius and Fahrenheit thing too around that time.  I was a bit confused.

I'm new to the whole sedan driving and I was very happy and surprised how well my little 2013 Kia Forte stood its first blast of Chicago weather.

And I must say, -47 degrees wasn't THAT cold to me. Maybe once you hit a certain point, cold is just cold or maybe it was just the fact that I didn't stay out too long those days to find out.

Yeah, it was definitely special the night before when I was out shoveling. That kind of, "Yeah, put a hat on you moron, or I'll freeze your ears off," sort of special cold. ;D

And here we are trying to stay cool in 40 degree Celsius heat!

I was in Australia last January. The day we came back, it was only about 21C in Melbourne and the high the day we landed back in Ottawa was about 7C (being close to midnight when we got back, it was a bit cooler than that, but not much). A week or so different, we would have flown from +40ish to -20ish.

That day when it was +42 with like 5% humidity and a Catastrophic fire danger rating causing all parks in NSW to close was fun... ;)

At least the extreme cold you can dress for. But around the day this thread was started, I had 2 layers of gloves going (where the inner layer is quite thin and the outer layer I wouldn't wear unless it's at least -5 or -10 or so), and my fingers were still feeling painfully cold after less than 10 minutes outside (apparently I need to get myself a pair of really serious mitts.. ;)

Yeah. I prefer being uncomfortably cold to uncomfortably warm any day. Blankets, motherfucker. =D

I've only been here since July. It's sooo hard for me to imagine being on the beach again and being too hot at this point.

And too cold = lots of layers. Too hot = arrest of indecent exposure
