That's an either or type deal, I don't put sweetener in mine so I don't have to worry about anything sticking around. Brushing afterwards also doesn't get you all energized back up, so you're still relaxed when you go to bed. The best nights are when I brush before hand, and just walk into the bedroom in the dark.
