I just started fencing a month and a half ago and it's the only sport I've noticed makes me appreciably smarter. I poked people better, yay. But somehow I still feel so lonesome. Like Ancalagon I was a Sabre fencer, but that was because I could never stay aware of my feet enough to keep them from getting poked. Utmost respect for epee, I could never get the hang of it.
