33 year old father of 4 (soon to be 5)

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I'm a father of 4, soon to be 5, and a desk jockey engineer for 10 hours a day.  I'm very excited about nerd fitness, and I can't wait to really get started working out.

Background:  I was a little skinny kid up until around college year 3, then I started gaining weight.  I had never worked out and basically spent a year flunking all my classes sitting around and eating really really bad.  I was somewhat active for a few years after that year, I got into caving and hiking, and played guitar and bass in a heavy rock band.  Then I graduated and got a job.  A great job, but not so great for the activities I had grown to love, had to move to the flat land with very little trails and no caves.  Long story short, now I'm overweight with a host of medical issues and 8 different daily medications.  I had a big scare a couple of years ago, my platelet count had dropped to critically low levels; we found out because of a blood draw my work had started doing on a yearly basis.  The doctor herself called me on my cell phone to tell me and had already set me up with some specialists to figure things out; she was scared for me.  I was very blessed that it wasn't something much much worse, just an odd blood disorder that we have to keep an eye on and check every few months.  But the months that it took to get that diagnosis right were just crazy.  I was on a large daily dose of Prednisone for 3 months, which, oddly enough, I was actually able to drop about 60 pounds in spite of the steroids.  I just cut my diet down to 1000 calories or less a day.  I gained it all back a year later and felt like death lingered on my doorstep.

But that is all over now.  This Ranger Dad is ready to win at life.

I like forums and hope to be an active member, but I'll be all questions for a long time because I know next to nothing about fitness.  I'm looking forward to making some friends and hope to one day encourage some others to make a change for the better.
