Cross trainers for a bad ankle

Hey everyone this is my first post here so if I've posted this in the wrong section please let me know. I'm in the market for a new pair of shoes, this comes as I start the rebel guide to fitness. During my time as a high school wrestler I broke my left ankle. The next season after that I sprained it pretty bad (grade 2). My question is should I invest in cross trainers or should I try out the vibram five finger shoes? I am trying to regain stability and strength in my ankles as well as my knee from a torn meniscus. Your input is much appreciated.
