Overheard in the gym - Share!

Recommended Posts

This morning there was a guy in my gym doing his overhead presses with an unbalanced barbell. He had forgotten to put a 2.5lb plate on one side.  He had a funny look on his face as he struggled to lift the bar up level with each rep. After four awkward sets, he finally realized what was going on and fixed it for his final set.

I had an odd one today.

I was in a half rack resting after my 4th set of barbell rows, just trying to catch my breath so I could go for set 5 and call it a day.  A pair of guys walk up to me and tap me on the shoulder.  When I took the music out of my ears I'm asked

"Hey, are you doing curls?"

"No, I'm just finishing up my rows"

"Oh.  Ok" *turns to buddy* "What's a row and why does it have to be done in the curl rack?"

......I made it a point to stick my butt out as far as I could at them when I bent over to do my last set of rows.

I had to google curl rack. I still don't know what it is, but I found this:

That's the thing.  He was calling the half rack a "curl rack".  I still haven't decided if he was effing with me or not.

TODAY IN THE GYM:

My fiance and I were working deadlifts, she just hit a new PR today of 170# (WOOT!), some guy training his girlfriend behind us, we hear.  "You see, for your deadlifts, most women shouldn't need to lift more than 10 pounds per side of the bar, that way you're not putting on too much mass" I almost dropped the bar trying not to laugh....

The way I see it is, if you're in there curling 225 with good form, that shit's all you, if not, gtfo!

Nonsense! Squat racks are for weights that you can't pick up off the ground (and need to get higher than a deadlift), so unless your biceps are stronger than your quads, pick that bar up yourself! No rack needed :P

One of the "fitness trainers" at my gym was telling me that my workouts need to be about 50 minutes, 1 hour tops.

He also told me I needed to be doing some more leg lifts so I could get definition in my abs. He, however, is a bean pole with no definition.

I suspect he was putting on his Cpt. Knowledge hat in front of his new client.

The roll of shame? Is that like when you have to lower the bar back down and onto the safety bar and then slide out from underneath?

'Cause I do that all the time lol.

I think the roll is when you're not using a safety bar, and you have to lower it to your chest, then roll it down to your legs as you sit up...

But...I want to leave the weights on the bar when I'm done. Squat rack is perfect for not putting weights away.

I will cut you.

hang on...you sit up???  I just rolled it along and then sat up once it was at my hips...was that wrong???

Yep...that;s what I had to do...it wasn't fun and I did feel ashamed...although also pretty good as I'd upped my weights so was feeling pretty good after my squat...

That's what I was going for... guess the wording was wrong...

I myself would see no shame in roll of shame... they only way to find your limit, is to push till you reach it... and you only know when you've reached it, when you fail...

So, I think I've found a hierarchy at my gym.

Cardio bunnies avoid the dumbbell, barbell and machine people.

Machine people avoid the dumbbell and barbell people.

Dumbbell people avoid barbell people.

Barbell men avoid the barbell women.

Barbell women strut around like they own the joint (and well....they do.  They tend to have the best squat form).

voices heard in my head:

"don't get a boner in my spandex... please... nooooooo!!!!!"

"why do i gotta fart when that hottie just got on the treadmill next to mine..."

"it's ok to fart... only dudes around me..."

"cool, that hot chick's walked by my treadmill for the 17th time... i still got it..."

"d*mn, that dude's walked by my treadmill for the 17th time... move on dude... nothin' here for you..."

"d*mn i look just like brad pitt in Troy... *flex biceps*"

I have similar ones.  except i'm bi, so it gets more like...

"So... brodude on the smith should bang... mmm..  That brunette doing lunges right now.  THERE's a hell of a porno.  OOH! and then the guy doing cable... whatever-that-looks-like-he's-killing-himself shows up, hot threesome."

...I think i'm channeling ron jeremy's ghost or something.

I did overhear someone saying something really nasty about the one bodybuilder at our gym doing stuff with the pvc pipe.  Which is stupid. becasue they were saying it within arms reach of the dude who could clearly pop their skull like a pimple.

While I was doing some dumbbell push press I got to witness a barbell catapult when dumbass who doesn't understand how physics works unloaded one side of the bar in the squat rack leaving two 45s and a 25 on the other side.

Luckily there were no injuries. He even managed to avoid breaking the mirror.

The other day in the gym some idiot was reracking his weights, and when he turned around he knocked the bar off one of the squat racks in spectacular fashion. Made a ton of noise and bounced around a little.  Thankfully there was no weight on the bar at the time, so no damage done.
