maelie
Hello fellow nerds! My story is, I'm sure, similar to many of yours. I've been struggling with weight & food issues my entire life and have tried and failed to get healthier more times than I can count. I have always been a firm believer in making small, permanent changes rather than going on crash diet & exercise programs, which are unsustainable and and don't provide long-term results. Which is why I'm super excited to find this community which not only believes the same thing, but shares my interest in all things geek! I am a web developer at Amazon (so if you've ever shopped on Amazon, I guarantee you've seen something I built!) and I love sci-fi, fantasy, and games. I'm a huge Potterhead and I could watch LOTR on repeat. It's also so refreshing to see an online fitness community made up of real people instead of models and body builders. I love the idea of gamifying my journey to a healthier me... I even found this great app LifeRPG that lets you create missions for your goals - similar to the "free character" put out by NerdFitness, but the app is more full featured - it allows you set up parent missions and repeating missions. You can specify the parameters (difficult, urgency, and fear) which automatically calculates the XP, as well as tagging each mission to a different skill, so each skill can level up individually as well. You can also assign a reward value to each mission/quest so you can save up and reward yourself with something! I think that app combined with the 4-week challenges here will give me a really good shot at success. Unfortunately it seems we're in the middle of a 4-week challenge at the moment, and then there's a 2 week break! In the meantime, however, I'm trying out the Legend of Zelda workout... I did it for the first time yesterday and now I can barely walk. Anyway, looking forward to walking through this journey with you guys! 3 Quote Link to comment

It's great to have you here! Have you thought about what your goals will be for the next 4- week challenge? I haven't tried the LoZ workout, what do you do? maelie
The LoZ workout is basically cross-fit, but based around the game! https://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/the-legend-of-zelda-workout/ I'm just a beginner, so I can only do the first temple at the moment - but at least I'm doing it! I've been thinking about it, I'll see where I am in a few weeks when the next one starts.... My current goals are: Drink water first thing in the morning Eat a healthy breakfast (I do yogurt, granola, and a banana) Get up at the same time everyday Do the LoZ workout twice a week Go for a walk twice a week, on off-days from the workout Bring a lunch to work instead of eating out The first two I pretty much have down, I've been doing them for several weeks now and I don't find them difficult anymore. The last 4 are more difficult! I'm actually making myself leave my credit cards at home, because otherwise eating out sounds so much more appetizing than the lunch I brought, so I do that instead. Without credit cards, I don't have a choice! The sleep one is easy enough on weekdays, but boy it's hard to motivate myself to get up early on a weekend... but I have insomnia and maintaining a regular sleep schedule is one of the most important things doctors recommend for that. And of course the exercise ones are always difficult to motivate myself to do, since I'm usually tired and just feel like lying around watching tv all day. 1 Quote Link to comment
SkyGirl
Ooo, sleep as a goal - you are a friend!! I'm a graduate student and I keep very erratic sleep hours, so getting my sleep schedule under control is a perennial goal of mine! Welcome welcome to the Rebellion and congrats on some excellent goals - you're already taking great steps to achieve them, like packing your lunch and leaving your credit card at home. I know you're going to be very successful! (Also, shameless plug for my own corps, but if you enjoy crossfit, you might want to come check out the Rangers ... there are quite a few crossfitters there! ) 1 Quote SKY ELVENWORD NOBLEHEART The Silver Archer, Ranger Level 53 Jesus-follower | Writer | Encourager | Resident Myers-Briggs and Enneagram Geek "Knowing that we can be loved exactly as we are gives us all the best opportunity for growing into the healthiest of people." - Fred Rogers Link to comment
Red1263
To help motivate yourself, try waking up earlier and earlier in small increments. 15 mins earlier is a good start, then 15 more, and then 15 more Sent from my SM-G925T using Tapatalk Quote Level 25 Final Fantasy Rebel My Epic Quest | My Journey | Currently on the Trial of Orthos Str: 60 | Dex: 23 | Sta: 66 | Con: 28 | Wis: 55 | Cha: 14 Goals for 2021: Spoiler Build my brother a Destiny 2 Lamp Learn how to do a Handstand Play 1 song on the acoustic guitar Clean up the Christmas Decorations and finish setting up my apartment (hang things up, plus some other few things that need to be organized) Re-introduce Pull-ups into my routine Build a shelving unit next to my Desk "No matter what, if you can hold your head up high, you've done the right thing."
