Turned 40 and signed up for tough mudder

Hello all! I have run accross NerdFitness resources (youtube etc) for quite some time now but have never joined a forum of any sort before.

In anticipation of turning 40 I signed up for tough mudder and have been training since August 2021. I had initially focused solely on lifting (squat, bench, deadlift, press) and gained some strength and felt great. Since January I have focused on losing weight and running along with bodyweight exercises. Now I feel terrible. I've had to take a break due to shin splints and shoulder pain. My hope is that I can finish this race without further injury and find a long term way of working out that works for me.

Working in healthcare I have come to realize that as I get older I can either be in good shape or bad shape, but the middle ground between the two seems to get smaller as a person gets older. Maybe this is part of a midlife crisis or something , but I'm hoping to make a positive change as a result of it.

40 year old Hospital chaplain here. You are in the right place. Starting to run often leads to shin splints or overtraining. As we approach middle age we have to be wise with out training to avoid injury.

Welcome to the forums from another 39-&-several-months-old nerd! I am not a runner but I am all about being gentle with myself while seeing how strong I can get. Impatience and pushing myself beyond my body's structural limits in my late 20s left me frustrated. Most recently, I find that GMB floor movements gentle but nicely challenging to my weaker joints and muscles (toes/feet/ankles and shoulders/wrists).

100% in favor of doing what we can to enter the second half-ish or better of life choosing to be as strong and functional as possible.

Wow! Thats amazing. What an accomplishment. I did a Mud Girl Run last year and it was so tough. And that was the easy code version lol. I looked at tough mudder and went "Nope"

All good! :) I put pictures in a spoiler tag for that reason normally. I can't be bothered to resize them. But I feel the majority of people use their phones and pictures get resized nicely on the mobile site.
