But...but I wanna do weird stuff.

I won't go ahead with anything before I get the word that it's okay, but I'll keep working on character ideas.

I currently have the following characters statted up:

Cunning sousveillance journalist

Clever ex-cop investigator

Planetside specialist neo-Native American

Blind violinist

None of them are really striking me (and I'm dissatisfied with most of their stats, but that's the kind of guy I am), but just so y'all have an idea of the sorts of things I come up with.

Has anyone watched the Firefly fan film "Browncoat Redemption?" Yeah so I watched it last night and discovered one of their character is more or less what my character concept is. I seem to create characters and later find out in the offical universe it has already been done. I ripped off a X-Men character for my first Mutants and Mastermind game and didn't know it until X-Men First Class came out. I have a gift.

M&M I ripped of Sebastian Shaw. My character, Blue Sun, was an absorber/blaster. She could absorb any type of energy and tranform it into a blast. (Yes, my GM let me do that. Mostly because it was my first RPG and I didn't realize until later how power my character actually was plus a mental attack could have destroyed her.)

For this game I ripped off the engineer, Brett Gray. The crews resident genius tech engineer that is socially awkward and is the smartest person on the ship that the Captian looks at when she wants a straight answers because he can't lie well.

These are my characters assets and complications-

Assets: Math Whiz (minor), Mechanical Empathy (minor), Total Recall (Major)

Complications: Dead Broke (minor), Straight Shooter (minor)

I am thinking about adding scrawny and hero worship to go with her background.

Oh my god, my tech was almost the exact same (Math Whiz, Straight Shooter, ridiculously smart and socially awkward). I REALLY hope Kevin is Awesome and lets me switch to my merchant character. I like her a lot better anyway. And it sounds like your character's background is deeper than my tech's was.

CAPTAIN: So... what you're sayin' is, I should turn it off, and then turn it back on again?

The background I was going for is grew up in space mostly on ships or stations. Father is a mining planet hoping to try and get rich. In between did some illegal salvaging. Thus the scrawny, The enviroment didn't let her get big and the low gav didn't let her get strong but I do have her as somewhat athletic because, in my mind, she would crawl into small spaces and climbing around on things to fix them.

Hero Worship is to her dad which is part of the reason she is dead broke because she send money home to help support her family. I am going to suggest a story line to Kevin later to maybe buy off that complecation.

Best one liner.

One short paragraph and it's already better than the background I had.

Hm. Our crew is looking quite large. But, then, so was Serenity's. I'm cool with it. It's much easier to manage large crews in PbP than meatspace.

Another pregame point. I think it would be better for some of us to have pre established relationships before the start of the game. Example- an existing crew is looking for some new hires or pick up passengers that don't ever leave. I think it will be easier than we all met in a bar, tavern, or jail and for some reason the Captain decided to hire us all. Mostly, my first question to the Captain would be where is the original crew. Pre establish also helps build the rank order. Captain, first mate, etc.

RBW- If you haven't watched Browncoat Redemption you should because they have a merchant type guy in it and could give you some ideas for your character. Wiki version- the guy is an "investor" that finds the crew jobs but the Captain has the last say in if said job is taken. The little background given the guy is connected and family is someone important but he doesn't want to be near them.

Good idea! How about you guys figure out if you want to be connected to any of these stages of my backstory and then we can work on how exactly we know each other: Born on Athens, went to an Alliance military academy, served as an officer for the Alliance during the Unification War, defected from the Alliance during the war and joined the Browncoats, now a captain of a ship where we try to find and liberate slaves and take other jobs that pay.

I found it and watched it when you mentioned it. Honestly, with fight choreography like they had, they should have made it much more actiony, because their one big fight was better done than some that Hollywood's cranked out.

My character isn't quite like that guy, personality-wise, but she'll be having a very similar role. She will definitely act as a fixer, due to her contacts (I took Friends in High AND Low Places), and she's very social-focused, so she'll be at the front of a lot of those sorts of dealings. Besides that, her primary focus is buying and selling, so she'll have a great place in a crew that's always tight on money. She's great at finding deals, selling things for more than they're worth (or more than what they are made to look like they're worth, wink wink), and otherwise managing money. She's actually technically not going to be part of the crew. More like "highly invested permanent passenger", a la Inara and Book. Still, with her around, the crew will likely be very comfortable when times are good, and manage better when times are lean.

As far as relationships with the rest of the crew, she's the kind of person who makes a lot of effort to stay on everyone's good side. Whether your character finds that somehow distasteful or not is up to you, but she definitely acts genuinely nice and agreeable with even people who openly take a disliking to her. She is a money-grubber, but that's not exactly an uncommon trait out in the black, and she tends to make shows of generosity and sharing her fortune when she feels she can manage it. When it comes to politics, she's adamantly non-committal, and she is genuinely evasive when it comes to any deep matters like religion or heartfelt beliefs. She'll happily act as a listening board and sympathetic conversant to anyone else on those sorts of things, though.

It's unlikely she'd be in anyone's backstory. She'd have found this ship as a matter of convenience, not attachment.

Harness, you're the captain, so she's all kinds of deferential to you. When she needs something, like a particular landfall, she tends to phrase it as a favor for which she'll show appreciation, and she often does. However, as far as passengers go, she's both independent and flexible, and is usually more than willing to make concessions and plan changes as fits the crew and ship's needs. So long as it doesn't require her to pay up a big hunk of cash she might not get back, at least. And you certainly recall that she was pretty relentless with rent negotiations, even if she's never made any mention of it afterwards. But, hey, that sort of thing's half the reason you keep her on.

Going with freeing slave story. Hope (my character) was working at a mine that the owner used a combination of slaves, indentured servents and freemen to work. Hope's father being one of the freemen. During one of the liberation attempts, your character runs into (this could become a literal statement) Hope. Big shoot out occurs, Hope learns the full extent of the evil the owners were doing and agrees to help your character escape. Flash forward to some space station where faith and star align the two meet up again and Hope is hired on as part of your crew. This could come into play where as revenge for her help the owner is influencing the legal trouble that her family is in now with their own mine which is the reason Hope is always sending money home and why she is dead broke.

or Hope's family hired your ship to take them to the current boomtown planet and something happens that made Hope stick around.

take your pick complex or easy.

For his background, all most of the crew knows is that he's incredibly independent and mature for his age with pretty good knowledge about mechanical systems. He rarely smiles and is pretty quiet. He doesn't keep to himself and will usually join the group, he just doesn't have much to say.

He also hates alliance. Some traits you'd know from being around him only a short time:

Assets

Steady Calm-Minor

Tough as Nails-Minor

Complications

Predjudice (Alliance)Minor

Loyal-Minor

If you're interested in having picked him up along they way, pm me for and we can figure out their relationship and what else you know.

hmm, did you pick hero worship as a trait? Anyway, what are your characters goals in life? What does he (or she) want to be when all grown up. Say it is a pilot and for some reason it is our pilot that the kid admires.

Or the medic was involved in saving the kid at some point in life and hero worshipped followed.

Or former slave that the captain rescued.

Again take your pick.

As far as anyone else knows he doesn't have any. It's not a hero worship kind of loyalty, more of a "I'm 12 and can't really travel the galaxy by myself, got into trouble because I tried and this person saved my butt and I can trust them to keep doing so, and I return the favor."

Like I said, very mature and was forced to grow up earlier than he should due to certain aspects of his past. He sees himself as an adult but understands no one else does or likely will.

I am picturing Short Round from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in my head.

Could it be a group loyalty. As a whole the group saved him. Or we could save this event of meeting him for the first encounter and work out the story then?
