perryj86
Hi everyone, I'm really glad to have found the site but after months of infrequently browsing at posts and articles I've decided this belly's gotten as big as I'm willing to allow and I want rid. At 27 I'd now like to continue the rest of my life as the strongest and most focussed man I can possibly be - Nerd Fitness seems to be a place filled with helpful, smart and encouraging people that could definitely assist towards me achieving that. So where do I start? I know there are a lot of great articles on the site but is there a solid start-out plan I should begin with? I'm not a lazy person, but I've never been a sportsman, I've had an on-off gym relationship for years and now that I'm living alone I'm in full control of keeping only good, nutritional stuff in the kitchen. I just need to know exactly what that might be (not as obvious as I first thought). I'm just very uneducated and when every piece of 'expert' advice and research is followed by another piece saying it's wrong it can become consistently confusing to know who and what to trust, as I'm sure you all know. Mostly I just wanted to introduce myself, say 'hi' and officially make my presence known in the community. I feel I'm less likely to get discouraged and sneak away if I make a few connections/friends from the start, so please feel free to intro yourself back - I'm nice, and open to all and any advice and comradeship. Also, how far outside the online site does Nerd Fitness go? I'm in London, UK and if there are any kind of meetups or real-world socialising I also think this would be big step in making sure I never revert back to junk food and ignorance. Thanks in advance everyone. With some hard work I hope I'm at the start of something good. Perry Link to comment
Duality
Hey Perry! Welcome to Nerd Fitness! Looks like you just took the first steps to becoming healthier and living smarter! What exactly are your goals and current stats? You want to get big and buff or smaller but more cut or just want to lose weight and be healthier? With those, we can help you with a path that you can take to acheive what you want For starters, if you search for Paleo diet, you'll see that a lot of people on this site adopted it or at least tried it. It might not be for everyone though. If ever you need anything, you can shoot me a PM, I love keeping people accountable for their actions It's not 80% diet, 20% exercise, it's 100% diet, 100% exercise. Give it your all. My journey (Date - Total - BF % - LBM) 2012-01-01 - 242 - 35% - 157 2013-12-15 - 172 - 10% - 155 2016-05-01 - 231 - 25% - 173 Link to comment
perryj86
Thanks Duality,I'm 5'5 and 150lbs which in most places seems to be a healthy weight, but after a big round the world trip last summer I've spent this past year eating pretty badly, so I've earned myself a little paunch and second chin. It's got to go. I'm aiming for lean and cut, and if my research is correct means I should be reaching towards lowering my body fat before starting on muscle definition. As I previously mentioned, the internet is a incredible tool for learning about this stuff but I get almost confused and overwhelmed by the amount of contradictory information so I'm not too sure where to start. Should I be doing cardio or weight training to get my body fat down, and would it be a good idea to take care of that first before starting on the muscle tone business?I'll definitely do some more research on paleo, it certainly can't hurt - quite the contrary! Morrigainz
I'd be careful about buying into conventional wisdom. As a guy, and at 150 (not that heavy), I'd be inclined to point you in the direction of heavy lifting. That being said, I am a Warrior and I like lifting the heavy things. What sorts of things do you enjoy doing? That's going to be the best workout for you - something you will be likely to maintain in the long run. As for rebels in the UK, there are plenty!
