New to this site but not new to training.  I'm 53 years old and have been training for several years and had to be sidelined for about a year and a half due to a pinched nerve in my neck, cervical disc disease, and a subsequent two level disc fusion.  I've been back to training for almost two years now since being given the go ahead by my surgeon but what brought me to this site is one simple thing: confusion.

Since my neck surgery (and I have no restrictions on training), I took an interest in reading more on exercise science, and am currently studying for a personal trainer certification.  The more I read, the more I'm confused.  It seems to me that 90% of the information out there, doesn't pertain to your average person (such as myself), who wants to stay in shape, enjoy exercise, keep my lean muscle, and keep off the bodyfat.  I feel like most of the info out there is either for the pro bodybuilder, competitive powerlifter, or a person who has the recovery ability that I had 30 years ago.

I've found that going back to basics and keeping it simple seems to work best, and it's better to be on this forum that on certain sites where people eat 4000 calories a day, train 6 hours a day, and don't have a full time job.  Lately, I've been spending my time reading Rippetoe, Chad Waterbury, Ben Bruno, and Christian Thibadeau.

Glad to have found this site.

Welcome to the rebellion!

The fitness industry is probably (ok certainly) doing more harm than good with all it's conflicting messages, fads and crazy equipment. Most people here had the same problem as you. Too much conflicting information and too many options to choose from make getting in shape a daunting prospect.

Glad to see that you want to spread the good word!

Thank you Silver.  There is so much conflicting and erroneous information out there, that I found myself struggling with program design.  The more I read, the more confusing it becomes.  Everyone is putting out the "best workout" and often times, at age 53, I'd find myself overtrained, or just struggling to figure out what works best for people like me.  Even alot of the sample programs from such highly regarded organizations such as ACSM, NSCA, and others are very much "one size fits all" or cookie-cutter recommendations.  My workouts these days tend to be total body 3 times a week, with one lower body exercise, one push, one pull, and one hip dominant exercise, along with core work.  Yet, I still have that mind set that it isn't enough volume.  Thanks for the support!
