New Rebel, girmann v1.0

Recommended Posts

Greetings everyone, hello to you all!

I certainly have to say that I think that this place is unusual. Where else do you get the combination of nerds and working out? It certainly happens in life - why not on the web, too! :nevreness: Like many folks here, my behavior would lead people to think I'm trying to commit suicide by sitting myself to death. I spend upwards of 14 hours a day on my keister - either in front of a desk or in front of a steering wheel. Sitting behind the steering wheel has the added bonus of driving into drive thrus far too often!

I was once a 10k and half matathon runner - but that was five injuries and 40 pounds ago, sadly. I've never been one to do any kind of lifting - just cardio, cardio, and more cardio: Running, biking and swimming (though oddly, I've never done a tri...) But I've been told by far too many professionals that without strength training and flexibilty, my arthritic knee isn't going to hold up. So I have two choices - grind my knee into dust, or change my ways.

Stats:

  • Weight: 228
  • Occupation: Travelling Engineer
  • Workout frequency: 1-2x/wk
  • Favorite exercise: Running, cycling
  • Favorite healthy hobbies: Disc golf, hiking

I think the first thing I want to tackle is C25k, though I know I have to do strength training and some stretching if I want to stay healthy. I'll be joining a challenge, too!

Welcome!

It´s never to late to begin strength training, so i suggest you change your ways instead of grinding your knee into dust :)

Great that you will post a challenge, it´s often easier to reach ones goals when you are specific and measure it.

And from now on, those drive thrus, will be drive-by´s, OK? :P

Level 3: Ninja

Current Challenge with the Druids (Nov 2nd-dec 13th)

Welcome to the forums!  I've also been eyeing that C25K program but I'm thinking I need to build up to it some because of an injured ankle and my weight and lack of general running skills lol best of luck with your journey!  I'd definitely recommend tackling the strength training.  Everyone told me to try it and that it would help me when I doing the cardio, cardio, cardio thing.  I loved it :) it's definitely worth a try.  It might become your new obsession!

Thanks The Swedish Ninja!

You mean when it says "Drive Thru", you don't actually *have* to? :redface-new:

Thanks again!

Dimia,

I don't know your situation, but C25k is very mild. But do what makes sense to you, obviously. Most people quit at Week 5, as that is the biggest jump in intensity. Most people repeat at least one week, too.

I'm going to try BBWW on Saturday. I'll report back!

Yeah it is quite mild but with my ankle and my weight I'm afraid to put too much stress on it to start with because that's a lot of weight to be coming down on it over and over.  I did some light jogging before starting the beginner body weight exercises and even that made it ache a little.  I'm thinking baby it for a while while walking to help strengthen those tendons back up and develop the muscles to help stabilize.  Hopefully by the time those are good I'll have lost some weight as well :D

Have you started the C25K program yet?

Yes, I have - I just completed W1D2 (Week 1, Day 2). I'm working on a challenge and there's a link you can check out in my sig.

Sounds like you ned to start waking first, but I don't really know - better to talk to a prefessional than someone you dont know on line! In the beginning, it's always best to be conservative. You don't want anything to kill that motivation!

Just saw your challenge, awesome work so far.  And yeah, I'm good on the elliptical and such because it's not as much strain and adding some walking in with it but eventually want to do the C25K.

It so awesome that you're getting started with what you want to do.  Keep up the great work.  Will be peeking in from time to time on your challenge!
