joshua.m1001
Like the title says, would it be a good idea to attempt a Tough Mudder in Vibram FiveFingers and what gloves are recommended? Thinking about doing one in September. Quote Link to comment
kombimankenny
I did the Warrior Dash (basically a shorter, tamer version of Tough Mudder) in Vibram Bikila's and they were fine, if I could I would have gone the KSO Trek's. Quote Link to comment
bzald
I dont know Mudder are not nice to you or anyone else doing them so im not sure how Vibram would far in those events although i have not done one IF you can stop to replace shoes? Then take those with a back up par Quote Picture unavailableMissing: Last seen Trying to kill her boyfriend while mumbling something about loving her boyfriend while holding her head saying “MAKE IT STOP!!!â€If you have Seen her plz check out my facebook account for update to the upcoming kickstarter for the book Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bzsteve Link to comment
Crizomaticus
Vibrams would be fine if they're what you're used to, no matter what shoe you're using, it'll probably get so slippery the grip pattern won't matter. The best shoes I've used for mud runs are actually Brooks Cascadia. They got heavy, but they maintained grip pretty well, and drained well. Quote Fitocracy | @chriiiiso Link to comment
Loren Wade
Coming from someone who has done Tough Mudder... I'd be careful. Here's some requirements:*Don't run with KSOs. Your Vibrams will NEED traction. Get ones with good traction (like Komodosports or Bikalas).*Full foot coverage. Get ones where the top of the foot is covered.*Tape around the top of the foot to create a seal.Even with normal running shoes, I had dirt and mud all throughout my shoes. Even inside my socks. It's almost unavoidable. I even had scabs from dirt rubbing against my skin and the shoes. Quote lobro's a druid? twitter | fb Link to comment
BarefootDawsy
I did the Mud Run in Sydney last year in KSOs and though it wasn't as full-on as the tough mudder, I didn't have any issues with traction, etc. The toes, however did fill up with sediment and needed to be shaken out after about 3km. I found them invaluable on the balance beam and climbing obstacles. Quote BAREFOOT DAWSY Scout Commander (ret.) Link to comment
Loren Wade
Dawsy, TM has some VERY slippery obstacles. I saw a couple dudes in KSOs that were having a deathly hard time climbing up the mud mountain.Otherwise I'd agree (you ARE the barefoot genius). Quote lobro's a druid? twitter | fb Link to comment
Gainsdalf the Whey
I'm planning on duct taping sandpaper or something to the bottoms of mine when I do it next year. joshua.m1001
I do have KSOs already so thanks for the detailed advice Loren Wade. I decided for it and signed-up today. Anyone else doing Truckee on here? Also for gloves what would be the important qualities: grip and water durable I suppose? Quote Link to comment
Loren Wade
Yes, gloves help. I noticed a lot of the guys using the kind with cut off fingers though. Just go for durable.I went gloves-less.That said... just make sure your entire attire is wicking clothes. Shirt, underwear, shorts/pants, socks. This will help a ton.I've been considering going up to Truckee for it. Glad you made the plunge!!! Quote lobro's a druid? twitter | fb Link to comment
joshua.m1001
Thanks again Loren Wade, the wicking advice is invaluable. Would gloves with a leather component be a bad idea do you think? As I have a pair of work gloves already but they aren't the most flexible. If you decide to hit Truckee let me know. Quote Link to comment
Loren Wade
I'm not sure about leather. I didn't go with gloves so I don't have a ton to say about it... but I would definitely say flexibility is a requirement. Quote lobro's a druid? twitter | fb Link to comment
Native88
I was thinking about using my Vibrams for Tough Mudder & Warrior Dash. The only thing that makes me wary is the fact that there is a lot of mud, and rocks and other possibly sharp things hidden in it. If you land in a bad spot in the Vibrams, it could really screw your foot up. Also, thinking of the Junk Yard area of the race, could be some sharp items there. Not sure if that is really a legit concern, but that's my only hangup. Quote Link to comment
Heatseeker
I was planning on doing my May Tough Mudder (PA) in my Trek Sports. I figure stuff's going to get into my shoes no matter what I wear, but having the freedom of feeling as barefoot as possible during some of those balance and grip-oriented obstacles would definitely outweigh any negatives. joshua.m1001
I was feeling the same way Heatseeker. Native88, unless that is the secret obstacle there is no such one listed for the NorCal Tahoe course. Also just found these new trail/trekking VFF's that might be worth a look: http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/products/Five-Fingers-SpyridonLS-Mens.htm Quote Link to comment
