Odyssey
I was just wondering how many of you nerdy folk are con goers. Ever been to a con? How often do you go? Do you costume? What's the best costume you've ever seen?So my stepfather was responsible for getting me into cons at an early age (13), and I have loved it ever since. In the past few years I got tired of only watching the masquerade and started into costuming. I have done a random pirate wench, a Plants Vs Zombies zombie (complete with sunflower friend), and a faun with digitigrade stilts. I'm still trying to figure out what to do next. I'm thinking Sarah Connor due to my advancing fitness, but then again, no con is complete without a slave Leia... The con is in March!!! Too soon. Anduril
I love costuming, I've been doing it since I was in middle school making Halloween costumes. I've done SF con costumes for a LONG time, and currently I mostly do steampunk outfits. I also learned to do makeup and latex over the years -- one time I made all three of my kids Borg for Halloween ... got a lot of good reviews from that one! The best costume I've ever seen IRL is a guy I knew when I was in high school who did a 1970's era Rollerball costume out of molded plastic, complete with skates. He won the costume contests every time. Niccolo
I am just coming into the field of costuming, but I love learning the techniques so far. I've only done two costumes that I actually wore out. The first one was Ezio from Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, which I was (and still am) very proud of. I wore it to a Video Games Live concert and almost won the costume contest (I could not defeat the cuteness of the child Mario and Princess Peach...). The other costume I've done was for PAX Prime this year. I was a Demon Hunter from Diablo 3. The build turned out okay, but it was my first outing with foam armor. Everyone said that it looked great, but I kept seeing problems with it. That and it started exploding after about two hours of wear. So, I ended up not too happy with it. I joined NF to help out with my next goal costume. For PAX Prime next year, I want to go as Monkey from Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. Since it's a shirtless costume, I know that I have a lot of work to get in shape for it. I also want to learn some more advanced armoring techniques, such as heat-molding plastic, for his gloves, boots, and hip pads. Any suggestions or ideas with those would be appreciated. I'm still something of a cosplay noob.My wife and I are thinking about possibly going to the Emerald City Comicon this spring, but we aren't certain. If we do, we may try to get costumes together for it.The best costume I've ever seen in person would either have to be the black mage from FFI, Sazh from FFXIII, and an awesome Fem Shep from ME3.Odyssey, I totally think you should go as Sarah Connor. cracked_belle
I'm actually on staff for MechaCon, the largest and longest-running anime convention in Louisiana. I also occasionally help out with Oni-Con and the local ComicCon.I've cosplayed so many different people over the years from a variety of interests -- including characters from numerous animes, Xena, Alien Nation, Marvel & DC heroes, original Power Rangers, etc.so yeah, I'm one of those folks. XD there is never a sudden revelation, a complete and tidy explanation for why it happened, or why it ends, or Why or Who you are. you want one and I want one, but there isn't one. it comes in bits and pieces, and you stitch them together wherever they fit, and when you are done you hold yourself up, and still there are holes and you are a rag doll, invented, imperfect. and yet you are all that you have, so you must be Enough. there is no other way. ― Marya Hornbacher, Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia Link to comment
Tanktimus the Encourager
Went to a comic book "Convention" once when I was a kid, it just ended up being more of a show where a lot of vendors tried to sell stuff, nobody was in costume. I really only muster up enthusiasm for getting dressed up around halloween. Lyr
I've never dressed up, but I've been to Pax East a couple of times. It's fun, but a little overwhelming. I'm going to be learning to sew soon, so maybe I'll be costumed in the future? I love to walk around and see all the great outfits, though! SpazzyMal
I love cons. I've been going to cons for over 10 years now. I've done a little bit of costuming here and there, but nothing really worth noting yet. I hope to learn to sew soon so I can do some cool stuff, because I really love costumes, I just haven't ever had the means to make some to really be proud of/ Or if I have made one to be proud of, it wasn't con-applicable. KAllen
Be careful, I've heard Batman keeps a tribble pouch on his utuility belt for just such an occasion.Ahhhh... the urban legend that Klingons are scared of tribbles. Klingons fear nothing, however, we HATE tribbles. They were vile disgusting creatures whos only purpose is to eat & procreate. You feed it more than just the slighest morsal of food you will soon have 10 tribbles, then 100, then 1000. Thankfully we sent a squad of warriors to the Tribble homeworld and wiped them out of existence. SkiBlue
Love costuming, and most definitely love cons!My first con was Otakon back in 2009, where I debuted my first costume ever: Bulma. Simple. Easy. But something I wanted to do because of the nostalgia I associated with the character. I've been to MACE twice, Con Carolinas for a day, and Heroes Con. I'd really like to go to more science fiction, comic, or gaming conventions though. And I most certainly want to do more costuming. I have a list that I hope to go through before my time is up. It's something that I've always wanted to get into, and I've been sewing and stuff since I was in high school. I plan on purchasing a serger here in a month or so to increase quality and such on my projects. And, I bet you can tell, I want to do some Star Wars costumes as well. Totally want to join the 501st. ellystar
I go to way too many conventions and make way too many costumes (http://www.acparadise.com/loves/stardust462). I attend a lot of cons in the Northeast every year - sci-fi, gaming, anime, etc. My big trip every year is to Dragon*Con, which is my favorite con by far. Link to comment
UmbrellaFrog
I've never been to a proper con, but I have been to the Discworld events that happen twice a year in the little English town of Wincanton, where the Discworld Emporium is based - I've dressed up as journalist Sacharissa Cripslock, a Goddess from Dunmanifestine, and (just last week!) a witch. I love costumes, it's actually one of the main reasons I want to lose weight, so I have more options (Some of the regulars have the most *amazing* costumes, like Cohen the Barbarian here, who basically is the character ) I has a deviantArt now! And a tumblr! Link to comment
SpiralGalaxy
I'm a pretty regular con-goer, mostly the ones focused on sf literature: World SF Convention, World Fantasy Convention, Readercon. I'm helping with the programming at the next 2 Worldcons (2013 in San Antonio, 2014 in London). I don't really do costuming, except in choosing clothing that allows me to show off my sfnal tattoos while staying decent. JJS
I love costuming. I've been to a bunch of cons, and always loved to put on a costume. I made a full klingon (including the forehead), I've cosplayed as Calisto (from Xena), and even a Tigger mascot costume. Plus several other simpler costumesOne of the biggest disappointments about gaining weight was that a lot of my costumes don't fit. Working on fixing that!! Odyssey
Wow, lots of awesome folks! ^-^ And thanks for posting pics KAllen and UmbrellaFrog!I have yet to make it to a Dragon*Con, but I did go to WorldCon in Australia. I feel a bit lost at some of the big cons, but then again a lot of the cons I go to are a bit smaller. My family is staff at a small sci-fi con here in the south, with the best damn con-suite ever. We also go to Midsouth every year (which is the con I'm trying to dress for this year). Losing weight makes me feel like I can finally be seen in a costume and be happy with my appearance. Though I do remind myself that cons, like this community, don't judge you like the "normal" people do. Guess I'm going to have to drag out some of my pictures now. LVL 3 Animagus RangerSTR: 8.8 | DEX: 5.6 | STA: 6.25 | CON:8.55 | WIS: 6 | CH: 6 "Today is not tomorrow." -Unknown Third Challenge: Victorious Valentine Current Maxes(Female 160lb bwt): OHP 110x2, Squat 265x1, DL 275x1 , BP 140x1 Link to comment
