Barbarossa
Less of a grunt and more of a low, sustained growl for the time that I'm moving the bar against gravity. Link to comment
Irish Oisin
Yeah, I think I do a bit of growling as well as grunting. Definitely like a lion (see above video) hahaha Go BIG, or go home. Link to comment
Sambalina
I love the tags on this topic I don't 'grunt' exactly. More of an 'Uhhh'. Maybe I should try a full-fledged grunt, see if it helps. Niccolo
You could call it a grunt; I prefer to call it a growl, but, yes, I do make sound when I lift. AustralMoonBear
I spent so long with martial arts instructors drilling me to ki-up with a strike that I almost ki-up at the peak of lifts. I consider grunting loudly far less embarrasing than a good loud "HIYAAAA".On a related note it always makes me chuckle when a researcher "discovers" something that often passes for common sense. Maledictus
This morning there was a guy there doing bicep curls with like 25 lbs, grunting in this oddly sexual way everytime he lifted them. It was really hard not to laugh. Like, really, I could do that without the sound effects and I'm like half the guy's size. I occasionally swear/grunt on the last/heaviest set. The guys that come in and make those weird noises right from their very first set always crack me up. stevembk
Grunts are ok If you are a real lifter. Not for some random guy who grunts after every forearm curl. SpecialSundae
I'm an accidental grunter. I really don't mean to grunt but once I get beyond a certain point I start grunting when I squat. I loved the BroScience videos. I think I may be hooked! Link to comment

obax
I've noticed a lot of loud grunting amongst the climbing crowd, specifically amongst small groups of young shirtless men tackling the hardest routes. I'm ok with some noise making, but to grunt/roar loud enough to make the whole gym go quiet is maybe a bit excessive. I make quiet noises, more loud exhalations than grunts. And curse, depending on the exercise. My sister is often the target of the cursing, since it tends to go along with me doing a workout with her and her pushing me. Dare mighty things Link to comment
RocketsMcGuire
Sometimes the only way for me to complete a set of anything is to grunt. Not on purpose, just seems to happen when I try really hard. The swearing is voluntary though. Adventurer Lv. 120/100 EXP Link to comment
JakeJoh10
I don't always grunt, but when it's a heavy squat/deadlift attempt, sometimes I can't help myself. I'm not sure that it gives me an edge, it just kind of happens. I do get annoyed with some people when they scream after every rep, but to each their own I guess . SuperUnison
I think it's perfectly acceptable in some instances. I tend to when deadlifting or squatting. Sometimes when other people do it's quite funny though, particularly if it sounds like they're fighting a losing battle with their digestion system. Link to comment
