What Motivates You?

Titus puts it best:

“This country you’re sitting in right now was not built on love, hugs, time-outs and trophies you didn’t earn! This country was built on shame, humiliation and striving to be better. By the way, if you’re in this room right now and you’re getting by in this world, you didn’t get there because someone loved you too much or gave you too many hugs or you got a trophy when you lost. You did it because at one point in your life, somebody to trusted and respected and looked up to turned to you and said you’re a loser, and in that second, you decided to bust your ass to make them choke on that sentence."

The cancer was aggressive, but the chemotherapy was aggressive, as well.

There was aggression on both sides.

My motivation to achieve my big fitness goals:

  • Wanting to not get old and fat, so even though I am 40+ the girls won't run in terror
  • Wanting to go on awesome adventures, which requires me to be in shape
  • Planning on doing the Spartan race in Greece in 2015
  • Wanting to make it to the top of Mt. Rainer and back down again without dying

Those are what gets me off my chair and out there sweating.  Once I am doing that though, I have a voice in my head that bitches up ones side and down the other when I am trying to wimp out.  I call him my coach and he is brutal.

I look at the data.

I love gadgets, and they have helped me immensely on my journey. My phone, my WiFi connected scale. If I'm down, or discouraged, or feeling lazy I pull out my phone. I open withings and look at the downward slope of my weight charts, I open LoseIt and look at how much I used to eat, and the crap I ate, I open my gallery and look at the pictures I take each month. I open Zombies, Run and look at the hundreds of kilometers I've run.

I look at how far I've come... every time it fills me with the motivation to see how far I can go.

What motivates me is the challenge. Before making my lifestyle change, there was no challenge. There wasn't a challenge for me when I was binging on chips and sitting on the couch in front of the TV.

Now, every encounter in my day is a challenge. "Are you going to eat the roll?" Nah, I'm good. "You have 30 minutes of spare time, what you going to do?" Think I'll do some calisthenics.

It's the constant drive to push myself that is my motivation. Before, when getting done with a workout, all I wanted to do was rest and recovery; now, I fucking hate rest days, makes me feel so lazy. Being as active as I am now actually makes me want to be even more active.

Today being my rest day, the only thing that keeps me from going to the gym is the soreness that I have from yesterday's workout. I know I worked my ass off and my body needs the rest, but my brain is the one that doesn't want to.

But I can deal with that :)

Thanks for those. They were what I needed to hear at the moment.

Embarrassingly enough, I have mini movie reels in my head of me being totally awesome. I think experts call this "visualization". Me, rocking flat abs and ripped quads. Me, squatting 200 lbs. Me, running fifteen miles for fun. Me, intimidating my enemies with all my awesome muscles. It's like fitness porn in my head. First, this serves to distract me from how uncomfortable I currently am. Second, I know this amount of awesome is only achievable if I finish the stupid workout.

I've been working on getting up at 5:30 each morning and exercising, and I'm not a morning person. So I've been pulling out every trick I know this week for motivation.

1) "I'm not telling you it's going to be easy, I'm telling you it's going to be worth it." My favorite motivational quote.

2) When I eat right and exercise, I'm in less pain and can do more things. No question. Results speak for themselves.

3) Comparing myself to my incredibly unhealthy mother, who at age 72 is awfully helpless. She and I share a lot of genetics (same height, build, insomnia, etc.) and I know that keeping active and self-disciplined is the only thing standing between me and that vision of the future.

I became upset with my life. It's full of things I can't find much interest in unlike others. Things like TV, gossip, small talk, etc. I enjoy getting fitter and I want to join the Army, I'm not getting any closer to goals taking the easy option. I suppose you have to go hard or not go at all.

While I am eating less rubbish, it's hard for me not to.

One of my motivations is m fiance'. Dude is ridiculously in shape, and keeping up with him is the ultimate challenge. I fantasize about the day I get to turn around after lifting something heavy and see an impressed look on his face.

My main motivation is my own internal vision of myself. I've had it since I was a young girl: that I was the princess who slays all the dragons herself, and flips the bird to the kingdom that says she couldn't. I've always been big for my age - tall and clumsy, and ignorantly stronger than my girlfriends. I ached to grow up to be Wonder Woman or Xena, a warrior princess!

So now I am. ^_^

I remember watching an episode of The Biggest Loser. One of the contestants is literally in a ball on the ground crying and Bob walks over and tells them to get up and the contestant says, "Why is it so hard?" And Bob stops for a second and then bends down and says, "So this way you will never forget."

I've spent maybe half my life thinking I was going to do these great things and then either failing or not trying at all. I don't know when but I realized at some point that I can be whoever and whatever I want to be, and the only person who is going to get me there is me. I won't ever forget.

I like to imagine that some day there will be a chance for me to be a hero. I'm always afraid that when that time comes I'll be one second too slow, one pound too weak. That fear drives me, the fear I won't be good enough to achieve what I want or need to pushes me to try harder than the time before.

I tend to use this mentality a lot for motivation. My imagination sometimes get the better of me, and it turns into what if I need the extra strength or extra speed to save my family during a zombie outbreak, or some far fetched idea such as that.

The idea of becoming a Hero motivates me.  I think of how much I will be able to help people if I am in shape and fit, not only in showing them how to also become healthier but ultimately happier.  Showing my friends, who all saw me as the biggest guy they knew, that I can lose the weight has motivated them.  The idea of showing others how much better their life can be keeps me going.

This has helped me in the latest part of my progress. Seeing a few friends from college recently, who knew me as their big friend, has them inspired to change their ways and become healthier/fitter. It's definitely a "hey! yeah you!  you did that" moment, and it's invigorating.

What drives me...

  • Being the best of myself for myself, (discover what the best of myself can be and enjoy all of myself even more..)
  • To lead and open a way for others (i have done it so you can do it too !!!)
  • And some times as Thrillho quoted “You did it because at one point in your life, somebody you trusted and respected [...]said you’re a loser, and in that second, you decided to bust your ass to make them choke on that sentence."

“Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.â€

“Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.†“If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done.†“Knowledge will give you power, but character respect.â€There are plenty of people in this world who know what they have to do to get what they want. The few that succeed are those who develop a character of constant and deliberate action.

“The key to immortality is first living a life worth remembering.â€

You only have one life in this body so make the most of it by creating something that adds value to those around you.
