Bearded_Dragon
Hello fellow nerds. Apologies if something like this already exists, but I was thinking recently that I'd like to get into programming but don't know very much about it. I'm very beginner, I've done some stuff with qbasic and visual basic many many moons ago and I was just hoping that someone here may know of a good starting place for me. Thanks! Papa Raf C
Do you have a project in mind? Like, maybe a web site or a desktop application? Maybe a video game? Quote No body, no mind. My Battle Log: A Weightlifting Story Link to comment
Bearded_Dragon
The ideal would be a mobile app I've been scoping, but I'm not too fussy. Quote Link to comment
Papa Raf C
By mobile app, you mean iOS or Android? Quote No body, no mind. My Battle Log: A Weightlifting Story Link to comment
Bearded_Dragon
I'd be happy with either...whichever is easiest Quote Link to comment
Papa Raf C
If you have a Mac, go with iOS. Apple uses their proprietary Swift language and they have a tutorial on their website: https://developer.apple.com/swift/blog/?id=16 Quote No body, no mind. Bearded_Dragon
Let's just say hypothetically that I don't have a mac... Quote Link to comment
Papa Raf C
Hmm, let's start again; I need to know how much you already know about programming before I can give you better suggestions. Some guide questions to help your answer but feel free to give more info:1. How much have you delved into qbasic/visual basic? What kins of programs have you created before? 2. What programming concepts do you have an ok-ish grasp of? (i.e. Variables, functions, OOP)3. What equipment do you have right now? Quote No body, no mind. Bearded_Dragon
Sorry! I am a proper n00b. 1. It's been a long long time since I've done any of that stuff (15 yearsish) and they were just simple like games based on random number generation - also did some HTML and created a simple website2. Hardly any!3. Windows 8 acer laptop (with laptop bag!) Quote Link to comment
Papa Raf C
Hmm, I see. Given your case, I would highly recommend taking a dig at web development. What you learn there can easily be transferred to mobile app development. PHP is a great language to start with. There are a LOT of resources and tutorials out there. It's also included in WAMP: a quick setup package for web development in Windows. http://www.wampserver.com/en/In about 5 mins. you should be able to setup an environment for web development easy. When you're done setting up WAMP, it's time to learn the language. I highly recommend buying a book. It's very easy to get lost in all the techy gobbledygook jargon in the web when it comes to PHP tutorials. Books have the benefit of being thoroughly reviewed and proofread before being published, ensuring that they teach you the basics before slapping you with the advanced stuff. I highly recommend this book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0321833899/ref=dp_ob_neva_mobileIf you really want an online resource though, http://www.w3schools.com/php/ is one of the better places to start in.Good luck! Code Academy Udacity Khan Academy I'll second these, and Coursera and edX also regularly run free programming courses with varying levels of prerequisites.
