Hello, My name is Sebastian and I'm a Nerd

Recommended Posts

Hey there!

I completely suck at introductions, so this is not going to be the best you have ever read, but will be a sincere one. I’m quite introvert and have a hard time opening up to new friendships. Being born to a navy officer, I moved a lot from one deployment to another, so I got used to not making friends I will soon lose. I get too emotional (This happened last Saturday at CNF2015) when saying goodbyes.

I’m an almost 41 yrs old nerd, originally from Argentina, but now fully American and living in the DC area. I used to be a really active child and teenager from biking everywhere to running, swimming and walking miles a day. In what used to be Argentinean Secondary School (grades 8 to 12 in the US system) I was part of my school basketball team, which meant I was at my peak physical condition, lean and never out of breath. That was so that right after graduation, I just signed up and run a 10k alongside my best friend, without even preparing for it.

Then came University, booze and pizza, which hurts us all in our college/university year. But what really did me in was losing that best friend one night I plead him to stop partying and go straight home. I will tell you the whole story if you are interesting later, but for now, just wanted to give context to why I let myself go back in 1994 and that spiraled down to where I’m right now. So that event really sank me into a depression I did not even recognize then. Long story short, since that day on march 1994, I’ve been putting on pounds until I feel awful and then try some “miracle†diet to go back close to my old weight. We all know that routine. So, by November 1998, I had gone from a healthy 196 pounds (I’m 6’4 and was around 12% fat) to a horrible, at that time, 255 pounds. Got into a holistic diet with herbal remedies and strict low cabs contain and went back to 210 by the next November. Kept the weight off for an amazing 4 months, and then started gaining it again slowly; by the end of 2004 it went back to 255, then 260, slim down to 225, back up to 270. Stayed around 270 for six year fluctuating between 265 and 275. Then it change from 270 to 280, 285 to 290. I tried really hard with exercise and adjustments to what I ate and was able to normalize it, but at 270 on September 2013. Kept it at that number for 11 months, run the Sparta Sprint in July 2014 and then winter came, I went back to comfort foods as I was getting more stress on me, and when spring came back this year, I was out of the 200’s, weight in at 309. Kept it a secret from everyone, but it did not help that I also felt like shit. So, I did manage to get back to under 300, 299 to be honest, nevertheless, no matter how hard I tried, I lost my motivation somehow and my poor wife cannot help as she has her own problems and most of her suffering is transmitted to me, willingly as I want her to be happier.

Then it came, May 30th, 2015. We were looking around the internet for tips to get healthier and she came across NF. And most important, the ad for the 2015 Camp Nerd Fitness, so we went into the sign up page to see what it was all about and without a doubt we grab one each of the 12 remaining spots. Follow tips on the site for being healthier and went to it last week. By the time I got there, I was still on 297 pounds but determined to change my life around and use the camp as a kick starter. Oh boy! It not just kick started it; it kicked my butt into reality. I found this amazing community of friends. Yes, if I met you at the sessions and talked to you, consider yourself accepted by this awkward nerd. Furthermore, it changed my whole thinking of how to deal with, yes LIFE itself. I'm worth it, I'm a hero, and I can be whatever and whoever I want to be. It is in me.

That is why, here I am, joining the rebellion, for a better me and a better US (as me and all of you not the country  ).

So, here are my stats today

Age: 40 yrs 353 days old
Height: 6 feet 4 inches
Weight: 290 Pounds

My goals:

  • FUCKING LEVEL UP MY LIFE!
  • Be 270 or less by Jan 1 2016.
  • Be 250 by 04/01/16
  • Run the MD Spartan Sprint 2016, May 15, 2016.
  • Be at CNF2016
  • more to come...

Peace out,

Sebas.- (Sea-Bass)

I can see you've had quite a journey of ups and downs! Here you are, though, ready to level up your life and we are here to support you! I would also like to make it to next year's camp since I was deployed for this year. Welcome to the forums :)
