ebm1224
i found a worm in my blueberries today. it was dead. but i've had the berries for almost 2 weeks...so i'm guessing it was alive until i put it in the fridge. kinda gross. i had poured some into a bowl with some other berries/nuts and then discovered it. i threw out the ones i knew it touched...but i ate the rest.i'm not usually squeamish but somehow this got me a little unnerved. has anyone had a similar situation? Corbab
I've never had a worm in a package before, but I spent a season working on a small farm, so I got to see the full spectrum of nasty things that want to eat the food you're trying to grow. I became pretty desensitized to it, and none of that bugged me that much in the first place. Nothing in nature is going to do you more harm than chemicals and pesticides, and a good rinse will take care of any stubborn undesirables. Or, free protein! Elastigirl
yea, it used to bother me. Now I have my own garden, so I'm more used to dirt and worms. oystergirl
I find this cute really because yep, the FDA allows certain levels of bug parts and yes, even rat droppings to be in processed food. The thing I do not miss is boiling pasta and seeing meal worms rising to the top.My mother tells a horrid story about living in England during the war. She was at convent school and eating lunch and there were worms in the meat. She told the priest and he said she was a lucky girl and should eat it because it was more protein. Now, you would have thought this event would have made her NOT force food on us as kids, but you would be wrong.I am the kid who ate ants and worms as a child, and the girl who on a bet would swallow the tequila (mezcal) worm, so this seriously doesnt bug me, plus I grow my own berries and always have to pick out the worms. My friend is a wild forager and she keeps the worm eaten bits to herself because she says they are the most delicious! tiny bears.....don't they love the grateful dead? Narakyndryn
I've picked a critter or two out of fresh veggies before-- freaks me out once in a while if I'm getting ready to snack on a big ol' green pepper and something 'jumps'/squirms out to say hi. I usually brush it off, run it under some water and eat it.Not a big fan of eating bugs, even if I DID work on Fear Factor. Quote Link to comment
Daffy
Found a worm in an organic salad once... kinda put me off. Just gotta remember to wash off our fruit and veggies. Bugs are gonna happen, sometimes.I competed a couple times in Fear Factor Live and ate a ton of bugs. It's not too bad, err, if you don't think about it. Quote Link to comment
67alecto
Just call it extra protein! We get worms in our peaches (from our tree) - as such, we slice them up before we freeze them. It's not uncommon to come across a lot of live worms while doing this. The peaches are so good, though, that it's worth the extra work. The alternative is to pesticide the hell out of them, but we simply do a few sprays over the summer to keep most of the insects away. Quote Repairing a lifetime of bad habits... Link to comment

mcdrew
I'm almost 100% certain worms are paleo. Would it have been more appetising if it was alive? Is that the problem? The worm wasn't as fresh as the berries? ;D Quote Link to comment

Relosa
They probably have a lot of good bacteria for you to be eating as well... You know acidophilus and such.As for growing your own food and keeping pests away, there's a whole "science" to how to plant crops next to other crops and how they each can help keep away bugs you don't want, but I'm too lazy to go out and look for any of the info myself. Deansy
I had some home grown broccolli the other day, cut it fresh from the garden at 8am, was eating if at 13:30.I had stored it in the fridge inbetween and then I was eating it, I noticed a couple of caterpillars. As there was a group of us eating, I calming took them off my food, put them to the side and continued to eat.As they got warmer, from being out of the fridge, they started to stretch and be more active. One of the girls in finance freaked out and demanded that I take them to the bin. A little over the top I thought, but never the less, I didn't eat them, but I will never know if there was three of them there to begin with...
