Is it just me, or does unicorn sound wierd with "an" in front of it? I know it's gramatically correct, but I feel like "a" sounds better.

If the word starting with the letter U sounds like it's starting with a Y, I'll always go with "a," not "an." There should be no such thing as "an unicycle" or "an unicorn."

That is correct. It is the sound, not the letter, that determines a/an. So "an hotel" is wrong unless you're using a French accent.

Similarly, Prince William is an heir to the throne, not a heir, because the H is silent.
