beledi_belle
Hi all! A little bit about me....I am 37 and a mom just recently for the third time. My youngest is 3 months old and I am nursing. In the past, I have been able to drop my pregnancy weight to within about 10 lbs within the first six weeks or so, but this time around (assuming it's my age), I am just storing that fat up for next winter, I guess! Prior to getting pregnant, I was running about 2.5 miles a day and doing Nike Fit Trainer nearly every day plus bellydancing 2-3 times a week. I was probably in the best shape of my life. Now I'm toting around an extra 30 pounds and I'm not sure where to begin. I know I need to start with my diet, but therein lies the rub. If I eat too much, I retain my weight. If I eat too few calories, it affects my milk production for my baby girl. So I have no idea what my calorie intake should be. Like I said before - in the past, the nursing has allowed me to return to my previous weight without my thinking about it. Now I'm stumped. I am also trying to incorporate some exercise, but it is proving difficult with my new addition. Here's my schedule - I wake up at 3 am to be at work by 5:30. I work 8 hours a day (break and lunch periods are used to pump), drive to get my daughter from school at 3:00 pm, go home and nurse the baby. I am at home until 3:45 when I load the kids in the car to pick my husband up from work. We drive home, I feed the baby again, then have maybe 45 before it's time to make dinner for the family. After dinner, we clean up, I feed the baby again, get the other kids ready for bed, and then we all go to bed around 8:30-9:00. I have very little time to exercise. I am getting 10 minutes here, 20 minutes there when I can. I am more exhausted than anything, but I'm so disgusted with my current body that I know I need to do something. So, now that I've blabbered on and on......What exercises should I be doing to maximize the use of what little time I have? How many calories should I be consuming daily? I just don't know where to begin..... Quote Link to comment
Princess Pineapple
You are so busy! I can't advised on breast feeding and calories. It's so important to get enough calories so your milk quality doesn't suffer. Can you ask your doctor? In the UK we have health visitors who can help you with that kind of thing. Good luck! 1 Quote 6WC #1 #2 #3 #4 Princess Pineapple's Epic Quests Link to comment
beledi_belle
Thank you! Unfortunately here in the US we don't have anything like a health visitor. The closest thing I can think of is a lactation specialist. I didn't even think about that! 1 Quote Link to comment
Basement Cat
Welcome to the rebellion! Well, I can't advise you on how to juggle your caloric needs with the lactation, but there is a calculator here to help you figure out your daily needs: http://www.health-calc.com/diet/energy-expenditure-advanced An article about losing weight while breastfeeding: http://www.thebump.com/a/lose-weight-breastfeeding That's a start, I guess, but you should still see a specialist to help you figure it out.
