So what sports/exercise thingies have you tried?

I'm a bit of a try-almost-anything person - with the exception of team sports, they don't really float my boat!

So, I've done...

Ballet, classical and jazz (age 4-12)

Gymnastics (one year as a kid)

Horseriding (age 6 to present)

Taekwondo (one year)

Tai chi (3 month course)

Yoga (occasional classes)

Pilates (occasional classes)

Burlesque dancing (occasional)

Rockclimbing (fairly infrequent)

Squash (go through phases)

Fencing (2 or 3 years)

Bellydancing (6 week course)

Circus/aerial skills (10 weeks)

Aikido (a few classes)

Archery (a few times a year)

Cycling (last couple of years)

Pistol shooting (tried 2/3 times)

Wiifit (go through phases)

Just Dance on Wii... (between other obsessions)

Kayaking (a few months)

Walking (ongoing)

Gym (a few memberships over the years)

And I suspect there's more!

Golly, that's quite a list when I look at it... Quite enjoyed them all at the time, but didn't stick with most, due to time/money constraints, or just can't-be'botheredness.

Riding is the only one I've stuck with (or rather, come back to after a break). Would like to fence again, when I can afford it. But despite this, I've never been particularly fit - only getting there this year with walking/cycling. And I would never consider myself a sporty person!

So what have you tried? What would you like to try? I have some vouchers for a Barre-Extend class that I need to book.

running - cross country (high school) & 10Ks (young adult)

fencing (very short attempt)

bike racing, road

bike racing, mountain bike

bike racing, cyclocross

bike racing, track

snow shoe racing, lack of snow has made that sport disappear in Minnesota.

logrolling (current sport, may drop due to time constraints)

I'd like to do a sport again, but my disdain for team sports keeps me out. I'd maybe do one of those martial arts where you whack someone with a stick, that sounds like fun.

As far as exercise:

all things scout-like (except swimming, as a kid I didn't have enough fat to float and I never really learned to swim.)

lifting

Shovelglove

kettlebells

shadowkat, Barre Extend is probably similar to Pure Barre/Balletone. A lot of girls here go to those type classes and swear by it/look fit. I can't afford the extra charge in addition to the gym, though. :(

just keep on trucking...

I was one of those kids that was on every team I could find. In most cases, I'll try any sport once. If I totally suck, I usually don't want to do it again (cough, cough, softball). I would LOVE to find some kind of barre class, but I live in a small town, so it usually takes 10 years for new classes to finally make an appearance. Maybe increase my running to do a half-marathon, just to say I did it. I also definitely want to get stronger. I'm thinking body weight routines, New Rules of Lifting for Women, and some more Body Pump will be on the agenda once I have my baby.

Hiking (as a kid; I hiked the Grand Canyon 3 times by my 14th birthday)

football (8th grade; either that or long distance running)

Shotokan karate (from 9 to about 20 or so; earned a black belt)

White crane silat (about 3 months)

tai chi (2 years in college)

capoeira (6 months in college; oddly enough, the instructor also had a black belt in Shotokan)

occasional gym memberships

Aikido (again, about 6 months; enjoyed the style, but the vibe in the dojo was weird)

Jujitsu (9 months while abroad in Spain; fun stuff, wouldn't mind doing it again)

SCA heavy weapons (full armor, rattan swords; good times. Never won any tournaments, but had a blast)

Jook Lum Southern Praying Mantis kung fu (3 years; stopped training when the money got tight. I'd go back in a hot second.)

Nota bene: if you want to see what SPM looks like, watch Toph Bei Fong's earthbending style on "Avatar: The Last Airbender", especially in "The Blind Bandit" episode. Her moves are based on Chow Gar SPM, a related style.

Lets see...

First, the currents:

***Rowing***

Weightlifting

HIIT

Running (reluctantly)

Bodyweight

Leisure activities:

Kayaking

Hiking

Rock climbing

Frisbee/ultimate

Biking

Yoga

Past sports:

Gymnastics

Soccer

Lacrosse

Basketball

Swimming

Fencing

Archery

I always liked doing something, but I was never really good at much until I got to rowing. Now, whenever I go back to one of my former sports, it's so much more fun in shape.

I have done very little.

  • Brazilian Jui Jitsu - attempted self taught between a couple friends who knew nothing of martial arts. Didn't work very well at out.
  • Walking/running - recently
  • Yoga - very recently
  • Home gym - on and off through high school. Never stuck with it.
  • Bodyweight - on and off through the years
  • Pistol/Rifle/Skeet shooting

I believe that is it. I was never an active kid, so I have barely done anything.

This is making me want to steal everyone's lists and try everything once.

The one sport I would LOVE to do as a regular thing would be to play football. I absolutely love it when I get a chance, but I've never been in a real game as there are no women's teams anywhere around here and I don't know anybody who plays.
