I am down to read whatever! Lets just put some ground rules down first. I refuse to read Fifty Shades of Grey. I intend to keep my mancard. /End of Rules. :P

But seriously, I am willing to read whatever and I believe that 1 book every 6 weeks would be great. Im currently reading the Song of Ice and Fire series which is quite lengthy but I will have no trouble picking up a second book.

Perhaps we could do categories for each challenge and then suggest books to read. That way a few of us get out of our "comfort" zones. Ive read that if you typically read Sci-Fi its good to read an Autobiography every once and a while etc.

I don't mean to be a twit, but book clubs are generally for books that have a purpose and can invoke intelligent discussion. Now I read a crap ton, and I've read all of a Song of Ice and Fire and Hunger Games and even Fifty Shades, but I'd rather read something intelligent and have people to discuss it with (like Handmaid's Tale, Jane Eyre or As I Lay Dying). I haven't had a good discussion since high school when I took AP lit

I'm definitely up for this. One of my goals for the last challenge was to read at least 3 books (which I did with flying colours :) )

My nomination is Salmon Fishing in Yemen. I think 1 per challenge is probably a reasonable time period.

Although would love to read the new JK Rowling too!

I definitely agree. I wasnt trying to nominate a Song of Ice and Fire at all, was just saying thats what I am currently reading so I wouldnt want to have to read more than one book per challenge. Gotta get my personal reading done too! ;)

I would love to have some in depth discussions on literature. We had some great discussions revolving around The Road by Cormac McCarthy.

I suggest another thread with a list of books we can choose from and a poll so we can all vote.

I'm keen to - I love reading, and I read all sorts.

I, personally think that ANY book can be intellectual and discussion-worthy, it's all about how you read it. Now, I haven't read 50 shades of Grey, but I have read a summary (so I'm, like 100% qualified to comment), but even in a book that is considered so poorly written and far from the truth (of most consensual BDSM relationships) we could discuss (just as one example) why such a piece of writing has become popular at this point in time. That could get pretty darn intellectual :)

I AM NOT NOMINATING IT! Or even suggesting it, I'm just putting the idea out there that one doesn't have to read 'intellectual books' to have meaningful discussions about them.

And just to be different, I nominate Lee Child's new book - 'A Wanted Man'. I love me some Reacher :)

Oh another thing, if a book is part of a series, I do not read other books til I've read the books preceding. If there is a book like that in a club then I will gracefully bow out for that round, unless I get through the preceding books :)

My plan is for this thread to have all the nominations, then Saturday night we'll "close" nominations and I'll start a new thread to vote. Is this okay?

Sounds perfect!

Im going to nominate One Second After by William R. Forstchen. I think as nerds we could have some great discussions on this book.

That's cool, Angel. one of my goals in the last challenge was to read 5 hours of fiction per week by always reading one hour before bed!

i like the idea of this book club, and i like the idea that we have a theme genre per challenge, and then we nominate books.

for whenever the theme is Fantasy, i nominate Good Omens by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett.

oooOOoO Good Omens. I loved that book, I would definitely nominate that if I hadn't already read it.

....you know what? Screw it, it'd be an excuse to re-read it.

First of all, I stickied the thread.

Hey Laney, thanks for reminding me! I've been meaning to read Handmaid's Tale or Ender's Game, so I nominate those!

And I agree with you in general :P

Second of all, I HIGHLY suggest Ender's Game. It's my favorite book and one that can and will definitely incite intellgent conversation. And it's Sci-fi, but not heavily so, so it gets nerd cred.

A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

My wife has been trying to get me to read this for years. Says it's right up my ally.

After just watching the trailer for the hobbit I am going to put forward the book :)

I'd be down, haven't read it in 10 years and probably should again before the movies. I have like 3 copies of it...
