Pacific Rim [SPOILERS!!!]

Recommended Posts

My brother took me to see it today as part of my birthday present. Loved it! I went in expecting a monster/machine smash-up and was in no way disappointed, if anything, it exceeded my expectations, which is exactly what I like to see from one of my favourite directors. I think the only thing I didn't like about it was how 'meh' Charlie Hunnam seemed.

Overall, would definitely re-watch.

There were a few things that bothered me, but the main one was

how once again they assume in a movie that a nuclear reactor can be turned into a nuclear bomb with a few small changes or a push of a button.

It had a button specifically FOR that, so I think it was designed to be a bomb as a last resort.  Which is also still mostly impossible, but still.

What bugs me is that "my robot is nuclear" means "it's analog and immune to EMPs!"

... whut?

The cancer was aggressive, but the chemotherapy was aggressive, as well.

There was aggression on both sides.

Yeah, that shit woulda been digital too. And if it had that button and was designed as a last resort bomb, why did they plan on the other Jager carrying a nuclear weapon into the void and having the made to be a bomb Jager escort instead of having the made to be a bomb Jager go into the void with the not a bomb , newer model, better fighting Jager escorting?

Shut up, that's why!

Come on, it's an homage action movie.  I keep waiting to hear Aerosmith telling me they don't want to miss a thing.

Another pet peeve...

"Wait? What about this gigantic sword that cuts anything?"

"Oh, yeah, I totally forgot about that!"

"Isn't this your mech, and you piloted it for ten years, and this is my first day on the job?"

"Shut up, Mary Sue!"

In his defense, he hadn't piloted it in a few years and they seemed to have made some upgrades. Perhaps she's the one that initiated the sword idea...

Would make sense. During the fight that caused the main character's brother to die, they didn't whip out a giant sword, which would have been crazy useful. What they did do was point blank shots with a plasma cannon.

Also, why is it that Gipsy Danger, a Mk III Jaeger, is analog while the giant Russian Jaeger is a Mk I... Wouldn't it make more sense for the older robot to be analog? Or was it analog and they just felt like it wasn't something that they needed to mention?

Also, no god damn way any of that shit is analog with the whole brain drifting thing they have going on. Gotta be digital components.

I think it was more that the EMP couldn't fry their reactor like it did with the Eureka but yes it still makes little sense when you think about it.

I admit I'm now a day removed from seeing the film but I though the Russian Jaeger got taken out the old fashioned way, this analog business was only brought up after the Russian was down, the Eureka Striker went in to intercept and the Kaiju used it's EMP?

I thought after last year and the Avengers that it would be a long time before a film made my fanboy heart beat like that again (Sorry IM3 but after the epic team up going back to solo movies was always going to be a tough sell and what you gave us was meh anyway) and I think this ticked boxes I hadn't thought about since I was 10 years old. Obviously the Kaiju owe more than just their name to Godzilla, Gamera, Rodan et al but the bit that sold it for me was the Jaegers. The whole thing is basically a high budget, dark, Power Rangers story with Jaegers serving as the megazords of our tale.

Apparently the Russian one (Cherno Alpha) started off as a Mark 4, but got changed to a Mark 1, so I would assume both are analog, and it wasn't mentioned because Cherno got taken out by the Kaiju, the analog thing didn't come up until the EMP blast happened, Cherno already being out of commission at that point, later to drown.... http://pacificrim.wikia.com/wiki/Cherno_Alpha#cite_note-artbook-3

It's not Shakespeare.  It's all awesome.   :D

I'll cosign that. After the movie, I turned to my nitpicky best friend and cut him off before he could speak. I said, "It's not perfect, but it's fun and worth a second viewing at least." To my surprise, he just agreed. Win.

The sword was an upgrade that he wasn't aware of...they mentioned that Gipsy Danger had gotten a lot of new stuff since he last saw/piloted it. He and his brother always used the plasma cannon, so that's what he always fell back on.

I have to say that the level of nitpicking on this considering the final product is discouraging.  And be honest...do you want your product-of-a-mind-meld-with-an-alien-plan to be resolved with an Apple laptop, or a

GIANT ROBOT PUNCHING THINGS?!

So far, my personal favorite is people saying they lost it when they said dinosaurs had a 2nd brain.  Seriously, a simplification of the description of a theorized nerve center is the thing that made this movie bad for you?  It's like people want to complain about it to be cool.  They feel like their ticket should have come with a set of schematics to build their own jaeger.

My two-cents on the digital vs. analog thing.  This is another result of a quick line thrown out to move the story.  Would it have been better for them to sit around for 10 minutes before someone sheepishly suggested that since the Kaijus had evolved to fight the jaegers over time, maybe they could send out the old tech out for a try rather than let it be hundreds of thousands of pounds of paperweight?  They aren't even sure it was an EMP...it was their guess that it was "like an EMP" since they had never seen it done before.

So they just let him pilot this thing into combat without ANYONE, ONCE, saying "by the way, we've made huge modifications to this robot that only you are qualified to use"?

They told him they'd been a lot of modifications. Presumably once they'd got past the drift test they'd have gotten a full run down. So given the situation? Yes, they would let that man into combat like that. Look at the few minutes leading up to that, his potential co-pilot had a meltdown during their drift test and nearly fried the base, they never got any chance to train or adjust to the new features. They were only deployed at all because Newt's neural link had allowed them to send Kaiju that effortlessly merked the 3 fully manned and operational Jaegers and the Gypsy Danger was literally the last line of defence.

Yeah, the sword argument is caput, they never got a chance to go over it, prolly would have been part of the botched test run.

There.  That took three seconds to type.  It can't have taken that much longer to say it, at some point while he was putting on the Super Spandex Robot Pilot Suit.

And that's the point.  It never occurred to anyone during the several days Raleigh was on that base to mention "By the way, here's the list of all the changes that were made to your robot.  As you can see, it's printed on post-it note.  I'm sure you don't need to read it right now, those weapons will never come in handy until you're 30,000 feet above sea level."

This is another example of why Grown Ups 2 wins the box office and ensuring that it will spawn another movie just like it.

Instead of happily basking in a cocoon of kaiju-blue dreams and screaming for everyone they know to go see it, we get "it would have been awesome if we could have sat through 40 hours of mechanical engineering and materials science seminars" to forestall even the slightest plot-hole-by-omission.

I talked to a guy at work today who made a comment about how he liked Pacific Rim the first time, when it was called Evangelion.  So we had a discussion where he said that Pacific Rim was exactly the type of movie he would like, but that he wasn't going to see it because and I quote 'he doesn't pay for movies'.  I told him that this is exactly why the kinds of movies he supposedly likes don't get made very often...

Blueprints you say... http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/nailbiter111/news/?a=70737

It was that way so they could have a triumphant unveiling, don't over think it, I know this is a nerd forum, but trying to over think films ruins them. Particularly a summer blockbuster that's all about the visuals.

For me... it makes it that much better. Get's my mind going about an entire planet full of Kaiju and Jaegers and massive robot/alien fights... and where could it go from here?
