I currently live in Japan (near Tokyo) and my Japanese is currently still really shitty (especially spoken/listening).

I have been studying kanji since January though and there's a pretty good program for it called anki. It's basically a flashcard program. There are a few decks for kanji and others for Japanese vocabulary. They're all free (as in speech and as in beer) and the program is cross-platform (plus you can sync it on different devices). Learning the individual kanji isn't necessarily the most useful thing all the time (since they're often paired together in words), but it can help you decipher the meaning of some words, if not how they're pronounced, which can be pretty useful.
