Jedi Padawan beginning his journey

Recommended Posts

Greeting fellow nerds, I found this site while searching for a way to get in shape and more specifically learn how to wield a lightsaber.  I recently purchased and heavy grade dueling saber for a Star Wars costume and would like to learn how to actually wield it.  As I stumbled upon the site and began reading several blog posts I began to realize that this may be the type of program I've been looking for to reach some of my personal goals in fitness and nutrition.

Since this is an introduction post I guess I should introduce myself.  I'm a 35 year old father of two (a 4 year old and a 16 month old, both girls).  I'm a manager at a casino so I'm on my feet walking around 1/3 of the time and behind a desk the rest.  Since having children my exercise time dramatically decreased, I used to run a couple 5k races each year and played Rugby 9 months out of the year.  As the title of the post suggests I'm a huge Star Wars fan, I'm still a faithful SWTOR player (Prophesy of the Five server in case anyone else plays), I have a huge collection of Star Wars things and have read just about every novel in the EU universe over the last 20 years.

I plan on signing up for the academy on Friday and a few of my goals are

  • Lose weight - get down to 185 lbs, currently I'm 6'0" 227lbs
  • Increase strength - I would love to someday be able to do a one handed hand stand like Luke did on Dagobah.
  • Increase flexibility - My back and legs are so tight and can't touch my toes without bending my knees.
  • Build up my endurance - I want to run a 5k in under 24 minutes and eventually move up to a 10k.
  • Learn enough about sword fighting choreography and perform at the local Renaissance Faire.

She really wanted to be Ahsoka Tano so I was practicing her makeup tonight.  I still have to sand and paint her headpiece but Halloween will rock this year.

My Togruta headpiece is almost done.  My daughter is so excited.  Tonight we are going to a local amusement park for a trick or treat night in full costume.  I'll post a pic of myself, my apprentice, and little R2-D2.

Welcome, welcome! Star Wars is friggin' awesome, and your youngling is adorable. ♥

Good luck with your goals! I just started running a few months ago and did my first 5K last month. I've got one coming up in a few weeks, and I'm going to be doing a 10K in December. The thought of doing a 5K in under 24 minutes is both awe inspiring and makes me want to cry - I just want to get under 40 minutes.

Before I had kids I was playing Rugby almost year round and was in much better shape.  My personal best for a 5k was 27 minutes in 2010.  The more I look at my goals I realize how much I gave up to devote myself to my kids/family/career over the last 5 years and I've ignored myself.  Spending time with them is worth it but I want to continue to be able to spend time with them actively over the long run.

If you want to do it in 40 just focus on that goal and go for it, I know it will be a long time before I get back to my old best much less shave off another minute per mile.  I think when the next challenge starts I might go back to the course and see how long it takes me to finish to see where my starting point actually is.

On the Star Wars note her costume was a hit, I had many dads come up and say how cool she and I looked together.  When I get the photos loaded up I'll post one.

In the end, family is generally worth it, so as long as you don't regret it, it's not an issue.

I can definitely do it under 40 if I put my mind to it. I did 2.97 in ~37 minutes, so another .13 in less than three minutes is totally doable. I have a 5K coming up in two weeks, and the goal is to be under 40. If I can do that, then I can possibly do a 10K in less than 1:30:00, which is my goal for December. But yeah, it's not a bad idea to figure out your starting point; I use mappedometer.com to map out a route around my house. I'm lazy, so having to actually drive somewhere to run means I'm not going to do it. Lazy, lazy me.

Awesome. :) Kids in geeky costumes is always amazing.
