Cat in the rack
You know what's great about a parent who manages a chain of sports clubs? Free access to a gym even when I'm away from my flat. But with a different gym comes different people who don't know what they're doing, and it seems no one had any idea what the phrase 'range of motion' meant here. One guy on the smith machine (hsss) did some bench presses to about 20 degrees at the elbows, saw someone courtesying in the squat rack, another doing pull-ups where their head didn't even get near the bar.Still, maybe they all had injuries of some kind, so I won't judge. Just like I won't judge the violent swinging from pull-up bars to get up, or the bending at the waist during push-ups. To each their own. SpecialSundae
Some of the guys were doing interesting variations on the pull-up bar today. One was doing a pull-up into pike into some sort of full inversion and back so my coach had a go and managed one iffy one then the strongest guy in the gym (squats c.350kg, benches over 200kg and deadlifts over 350kg) had a go and couldn't get beyond a pull-up before dropping down laughing. Really fun to watch! A guy also wandered up to my coach, told him it was good to see him and then followed up with "And I see you've added a female superhero to your gang." 7 Link to comment

StillWaters
I gotta ask: Did he have a hook or straps on his handless arm, or was he just picking the whole thing up with one hand and balancing it that way? He had a hook strapped onto the handless arm. 1 Link to comment
Cat in the rack
I gotta say, having one arm and doing deadlifts is pretty dedicated. If I lost an arm I'd probably stick to unilateral exercises, the dumbbell rows and presses and whatnot. Never in a million workouts would I think of doing deadlifts. SpecialSundae
Oh yes, there was also ironic curling in the squat rack today for teh lulz. (I did not join in.) Mostly because I'd embarrass myself not being able to curl the bar for more than a couple of reps... Link to comment
Cat in the rack
The other day I was doing incline bench press, but the racks were taken and the bench press bench didn't adjust, so I had to use one if the free benches and a regular barbell. I decided to ask the guy next to me for a spot, not because of the weight, but just so someone could lift the weight up to my hands before and take the weight once I'd finished. I made this clear to the guy spotting me, and said not to touch the weight until I was done even if I was struggling. First set, I'm roughly four reps in and not struggling (I ended up doing sets with 10kg more weight on), he grabs the bar and starts helping me lower and raise it for the last four sets. After he's put the bar down I ask if he can not touch the bar at all until the last rep is done unless I ask him to, he says sure. You can guess what happened on set 2, the same exact thing, four reps in he grabs the bar and starts helping me move it when I can easily manage it.Anyway, after that I told him thanks, waited for him to leave, and asked anybody else for a spot. The next guy I asked did it right, so that's a plus. I don't know if the first guy was a) a moron, not listening or c) purposely doing a shit job so as not to be asked again. AugustaAdaByron
I don't like people touching the bar no matter how much I'm struggling. I prefer start failing the rep and then have the spotter touch it. I also don't like it when people touch the bar or me when I'm about to start a rep because that's when I try to make sure everything is balanced. That has happened a few times and I've had a rant for each one of them. That being said, I don't think he was a moron or not listening or doing it on purpose. When you ask someone to spot you, you also partly give them the responsibility of your well-being. If the bar accidentally fell on your face or your neck then you'd also think he was a moron. He probably just felt extra responsible and was being extra cautious. 2 Level "I have no clue" Warrior Current challenge Battle log Link to comment

I prefer start failing the rep and then have the spotter touch it.Thanks to a still asleep brain. I read that as " I don't like people touching my bra no matter how much I struggle." Had a trainer come over the other day when I was teaching my wife how to squat. The trainer just stood there for a minute as I spotted her (the kind where you squat along with them and the support their chest if they need help). After the last rep re trainer chucked and started to walk off. Me (being full of raging tesostrone and wanting to defend my lady's honor) asked him what he thought was so funny. The response was one of the best I have ever heard. "We had a couple of people complain about 'inappropriate touching' happening between you two, so I came over to see what was going on. Don't worry you were doing everything correctly, those people suffer from cardiovascular cranial rental insertion, aka they are all little cardio bitches who have their heads shoved up their asses." With that he chuckled and walked off. Had never thought of it like that before but I guess it would have looked like I was groping her whole spottingSent from my phone, through the banging of weights, to the chimp translators aboard the tardis powered by the dylithiam crystal flux capacitor. 12 Level 0 Human, Monk 82%82% Lose 75 lbsStartin Fresh"Nothing is ever easy." Why not?
I usually work out alone and haven't asked for a spot on something since college. Twice, this has had consequences worthy of inclusion in a gym fail video. The first involved me benching until failure and then having to roll the bar down my torso so that I could sit up. Getting it over my pelvis was the hard part... The second involved me learning from the first and not putting clips on the ends of the barbell. This allowed me to dump the weights off on one side. 2 Long Term Goals: Spoiler 200# 245# Snatch 300# Clean and Jerk 380# 465# Back Squat 450# 500# Deadlift Planche Human Flag Front Lever 285# Log Clean and Press 1k Row under 3:20 Back Flip Bodyweight Turkish Get-up For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for the present life and the life to come. 1 Timothy 4:8 Never compromise.
