I used to use a hammer and just drive a philips head screwdriver through the belt, but I tried using a drill and standard drill bit last time and it was much easier and cleaner, but not perfect. The drill method helps this but doesn't rid me of it completely. Does a nail punch remove the material? Make sure you've put the belt on something disposable - like a scrap piece of lumber. You don't want to punch a hole in your dining room table.
