What games you're currently playing:

Borderlands (the first one)

Skyrim (Dawnguard)

  • What was the last game(s) you finished:

Skyrim. I'm technically finished with the main quest, there are just a lot of little side things I'm doing. And I downloaded Dawnguard.

  • What game(s) you're looking forward to this year:

I honestly don't know. I had heard some buzz around The Last of Us and a friend of mine is loving it. I'd really like to play it if I had a ps3. I think my Xbox-loving BF is going to make the switch to the ps4 when it comes out just because of the whole Microsoft fiasco.

Also, I am desperate for a game like Skyrim... is it even worthwhile to buy something like Oblivion? A coworker recommended Borderlands because it is "open world" but I just can't get into it. And then I find myself playing Skyrim or dreaming about creating a new character. I found myself really caring about the world of Skyrim. Last night I was playing and a friend was like, "cut that guys head off" and I was in an inn in Riften. I had a really strong reaction like, "no I can't just walk around murdering people. I'm in a town, hello, there are rules". Nerd alert!

Ooh, I've been looking into that. Is it worth the time/money investment?

If you've played World of Warcraft and walked away with a lot of problems and frustrations, then you'll love this game. Basically, everything that made WoW a huge time sink is fixed in this game. You get XP for EVERYTHING--even crafting gives you XP toward your overall level progression. When you die, you enter a "fight to survive" state where you're prone and scrambling to stay alive. Other players can revive you, or if you last long enough you get back up and get back into the mix. Any players can assist any other players at any time, even if you're not in the party, and when you assist with a kill EVERYBODY gets equal XP. As you travel across zones, your stats are constantly being adjusted so that you're at max level for the current zone, but the XP you earn goes to your next actual level (so you're level 14 and go into a level 8 zone, your stats will be adjusted to level 8, but if you ding your and go back to a level 15 zone, you'll be level 15--you also keep any skills and perks that come with your actual level when your stats are adjusted).

There's no subscription fee. You just buy the disc. There are some cosmetic items and services you can buy with real money; this is done through an online gem shop. You buy gems with real money, then spend the gems on stuff like weapon and armor skins, temporary buffs, special items, and such. You will never have to spend money past buying the disc, however, as all of the gem shop items are for fun and/or convenience. Also, you can exchange gems for currency for your character (handy if you spend gems and find yourself with not enough to buy something useful).

Oh, and if you go PVP, you're automatically jacked to level 80 (your gear and skills are unchanged, however).

I would highly recommend it. We're on Isle of Janthir if you decide to give it a go; I'm a Norn Ranger named Faoriskirne and she's a Norn Mesmer named Thecreide. We'll glad to show you the ropes.

Never played Oblivion, but I know what you mean. Have you ever played the Mass Effect or Dragon Age games? They're not exactly open world, but they are totally awesome.

And if you DO want something open-world, I highly recommend Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. Made by the same company as Skyrim, so they have very similar rules, only set in a post-nuclear wasteland.

Sounds like something I'll have to check out.  It might be a little while, though - I've promised myself that I can't play a new video game until I get some web design work done.

I have a love-hate relationship with the Elder Scrolls series. I've played Morrowind and Oblivion, was caught up for like, two weeks, and then just lost interest. There's just TOO MUCH to do explore.

But Skyrim? Oh, Skyrim.

Think about this way: Morrowind was like alternative rock--a weird setting, trippy NPCs, a storyline based in mysticism and stuff; Oblivion: classic rock--it's a standard fantasy RPG with some unique spin put on it by virtue of who created, but nothing spectacular; Skyrim is straight up f$!ing metal. You're in a hostile land where everything want to kill you. Your closest allies are viking warriors. You slay dragons and EAT THEIR SOULS to gain power.

Yeah, it's that badass. It also has the cleanest design and most beautiful scenery of all the most recent Elder Scrolls games, plus I love the fact that you don't choose a class; you literally craft your character from the ground up. It's a lot of fun. Give it a go. The Legendary Edition, with all the DLC on the disc, is out right now. The base game (with improvements) plus all the DLC for $60. Not a bad deal.

I actually started over with a new character. And because I have a much better understanding of how the game works, I'm not collecting a bunch of random weapons, books, etc. My character is much more minimalist. I started using magic from the get-go. And honestly, I've been doing some quests that I've never done before. Like, "I've never been in this cave before, what the hell?" It's great. I'm also makign a point to check out towns I never spent much time in. Although I am a die-hard stormcloak, I feel like I must play the Imperial side this time.

What games you're currently playing:

Neverwinter, fiddling with Rift, and Plague Inc. (mobile games count, right??)

What was the last game(s) you finished:

Um... MMOs don't really end.  Plus, I'm terrible about finishing standalone games.  Really terrible.  I have Portal 2, all three Mass Effect, and Tomb Raider (2013) all started.  In my defense, it's because I have younger kids so I have to wait until they are asleep to play them, but by that time I'm half-asleep myself.

Anyhoo, the last games played through were: Defiance, GW2, and Tera.

What game(s) you're looking forward to this year:

The Repopulation, unless they push the release date back, in which case I'll just have a mini-tantrum.

So have you been keeping up with any of the latest EVE drama? Like the loss of a 309 billion ISK supercap because of a spy? Or the 400 billion ISK stolen because another spy? God I miss that game sometimes....

Sure have! Watched the YouTube video of the ambush and battle earlier today. The revenant (1 of only 3 in game) went down in about a minute as did all the others...one by one.

I missed the 400 billion stolen. May need to look that one up.

Currently playing through Diablo III, since I bought it forever ago and then it just sort of say on my HD collecting dust.

Haven't really beaten any games recently, I don't play as often anymore.

I'm always playing EVE Online. It's a neat MMO that you can actually progress in without playing, by training skills.

Kinda handy when you actually have a life and fitness routine.

I've been playing The Secret World, which is a MMO with a modern-day horror/supernatural theme that was a surprisingly fun switch from WoW. It's not been as successful as Funcom might have hoped, so I'm not sure how much of a future it has, but I'm enjoying playing through the PvE content, and the storylines and writing are really well done. Then my boss has recruited me back into WoW again...not sure how long I'll stick around this time, but for now, PANDA BOOT TO THE HEAD!

I did beta testing for the secret world, but didn't continue after the beta due to being too busy. Always have wanted to go back and give it a shot, but funcom left a bad taste in my mouth with Age of Conan.

I'm not playing anything at the moment, too much school right now. The only game I'm waiting on, I try not to get excited about games after the D3 debacle, but I couldn't help it with Trials of Ascension... open PVP, a form of permadeath, true darkness, hard to acquire magic, and classless... get's me all giddy to see someone break from the mold...

I do have a decent latop now that can run the game (even has a decent vid card) and a brand new 27in monitor to play it on. It is tempting....

Currently: Divinity II - The Dragon Knight Saga (much better than I expected!)

Last game: Crysis 3 (beat it yesterday on my 3D HDTV 8)... I highly recommend a good 3D TV, games are amazing looking, especially Crysis 2 and 3! I have a beast of a PC so I can run them on ultra graphics too, it was probably the top gaming experience I had in years.

Game I'm looking forward to this year: NHL 14 in September, and next year I am excited about Elder Scrolls Online.

tl;dr is how I roll

League of Legends (I own all but 15 champs), Path of Exile (what DIII should have been), and Marvel Heroes (kind of disappointed)

What was the last game(s) you finished:

Either Tomb Raider or Bioshock Infinite, I played them one right after the other so I'm not sure which was last.

What game(s) you're looking forward to this year:

Watchdogs and Division

I'm back into Skyrim, playing that on the PC. Made an Imperial who specialises in stealth, archery, dual wielding blades and light armour. Very tempted to just hack my game and be a GOD. Oh yes. I'm also playing (in short bursts) Pokémon: Black and White 2 (Black) and I'm occasionally replaying The Last of Us.

What was the last game(s) you finished:

The Last of Us. Absolutely AMAZING game.

What game(s) you're looking forward to this year:

Well, I'm disappointed with Deadpool... yet to play it but the reviews on the game don't seem very good. I'm looking forward to Batman: Arkham Origins though as well as the release of the PS4, which I'll probably end up getting along with Infamous: Second Son.

Break out those spreadsheets and jump back in! I've logged in the past few days for a couple hours preparing to realign what I want to do. Selling off a few things....about to sell my Maelstrom to buy a T3 Strategic Cruiser (the Loki), skilling up for a combat and PVP style game play away from my carebear ways in industry. There's a new corp out there formed by a guy who broke off from one for the bigger corps. The idea behind it is an old school small gang and solo pirating corp....all are welcome at this point ( stayfrostyeve.com ). New to PVP, they'll show you the ropes, etc. They live in low sec not far from where I live.

I'm gonna be gone this weekend and all next week, so I'm getting my skill queue set up for the next 1-2 weeks while I'm out of game. When I return, I expect to find you in game ready to fly some internet spaceships with me! :)

Edit: BTW....I too have a nice new shiny 27in monitor....and the game is gorgeous with it! Also, to entice you just a bit more. Stargate jumps now have a new animation instead of a loading bar. Let's just say after seeing it, you'll want a ship shaped like the Tardis...

I wanted to get into skyrim but when I first played I didn't know who anyone was so I *THOUGHT* I was killing some imperials that I was told were the bad guys but then I went back to town and all the villagers started stabbing me! So then I'm running away because I didn't know how to use skill points yet and I suck.  I run around the entire village about 10 times, trying to shoot arrows at hostile villagers.  Then this one woman was insta-killing me, so I had to run away and shoot her from across the river.  Finally killed her and she came back to life and killed me.  I was so frustrated that I quit for a while. I started playing again and I think I stabbed rolfe? back in town but rolfe? is now with me up in the northern territories.  I'm just lost right now.  Who the heck are the good guys and who are the bad guys?

In the world of Skyrim terosx, I'd say it's one of those games were it's ask questions first, shoot later. Unlike most traditional video games you shouldn't go around murdering everyone you see otherwise that's surprisingly going to cause a bit of trouble.

In towns, it's very safe to assume no one is your enemy.

Out in the wilderness, or in caves/dungeons it's pretty easy to tell who enemies are... generally by the way they dress, how they just stand there almost "waiting" for someone and if they hear you (but not see you) you'll hear them say "What was that?" and stuff.

Also on your little radar compass thingy on screen, enemies are indicated as red dots. Enemies who are nearby but you've yet to physically encounter will appear on the compass as such. However, if you attack a "good" person, they will become your enemy. There is a way to "yield" to good people, but I forget how to do it sorry.
