I tend to stay away from full-on casting classes in 2nd ed, but am willing to play healing domain wizard (ala Mr. Correy's world rules) if no one else wants to be a healer. Never grouped with a bard in my very limited D&D experience. FYI: I am rolling up a Fighter, with weapon specialization in Long Bow; will use sword small shield in close. But I am here for fun and willing to re-roll any class we may need. It's all pretty much new to me. Another dumb noob question, is there a specific realm this will take place in? just wondering for making background info and details to round out the character. Everyone else sees him running around the alleyways of the city with his arms spread like he's flying and talking to himself in whispered tones. mitch_dee Posted September 3, 2013 Report Share Posted September 3, 2013 OK out of sheer craziness of not knowing what to play or what the group may need,I have used my attribute roll and created 4 different characters (minus some details that will be flushed out after world building).I will play any of them that the group thinks would be needed, after rolling them up I like them all equally so no loss to me and it helps us all if needed. We have:Fighter: standard meat shield, front line fighterFighter: long bow specialist range fighter/back-up meat shieldCleric: domains will be determined laterMage: true 'squishy'So once everyone has a better idea of what they are playing and what the group looks like I will fill in the gap. If no gap exists I may just have to flip a coin! Once in there you'll be able to just RP in the tavern and have fun until everything comes in and we're ready to start. Once I get everything done, I'll give everyone a week or so notice to try to get everything to me if they haven't at that point. Hoping to start getting dieties set up. I'm having a hard time deciding on if different races have different dieites or if they have the same ones. If dieties are "involved" and commune, then there's proof of their existance and I feel like there should only be one set across all the races, but perhaps they worship or view them differently. Nope, that's part of the fun of first forming up. You guys aren't going to be an established adventuring band. Maybe 1 or 2 of your know each other or have history together if you want to work that into your backgrounds (Rathrune and I always used to when we played together, makes the roleplaying fun), but mostly you guys are new to the adventuring life. For background purposes: To start the game, you guys will each be arriving at a tavern/inn in the small town of Melva looking for a place to stay the night. You're about 60 miles inland from the eastern shore and Delfraca, a small city state inhabited mostly by humans but with a mixture of most races sprinkled around like all port/trade cities. Delfraca controls the lands for about 2 days ride (80 miles) around it with various farming villages sprinkled within those lands that answer to the Delfracan government on major issues but are mostly self governing. Melva is one of these, lieing on the main road to the west from the city. Any humans or half elves are likely from the city or this area, though this is not a restriction. To the west another 30 miles is a minor mountain chain, home to the Dwarven settlement by the name of Dorga. One of the major supporting influences of Delfraca's economy is that the Dwarves do a lot of trade by sea through Delfraca of ore and gems as well as trading with the farmers themselves at the market or in the villages for food. Any Dwarves in the party are likely from here. To the south the land becomes marshy and swampy after not too far as the mountains dwindle to foothills and meet the ocean. To the north are forests that are known to be inhabited by a elves, their city of Vel'haran lieing somewhere deep within. It's not a secret, just none of you that are not elven have ever been there. Any full elves are probably from there or the other small elven settlements within and would know how to get there. The Vel'haranian also do trade through the port, though not as much as the Dwarves as they have other prospects to the north as well, such as the larger, more powerful city of Graldurias, which is home to both Dwarves and men and run by a council of both. Magic users from the Delfracan area would have been schooled by the local healer/magic user once their abilities presented themselves at puberty. Most towns of any size have one as about 1 in 20 people develop some sort of ability or access to magic, though most not to the extent of your typical adventuring wizard. 1-2 schools is common, any more than that is more rare, and most never really dabble too deeply in the arts beyond the needs of their family and life. Those with this level of "the gift" as it is called are typically taught enough not to hurt themselves or others, then sent off to keep living their lives and exploring their ability as they see fit. Some learn a few tricks, but many never advance beyond mere cantrips or a few first level spells. The probelm is access to more advanced spells, which are typically guarded closely by those who know them, just like weapons are in our world. You don't just hand something like that over for no price, you must first get to know the person you would teach as well as exacting a price for this gift. The typical villager simply does not have the time or resources to give for this or really the need for the information. Those who are really curious or show more potential can go into the city and are often taken on as apprentices by the more powerful practicing magic users there. Like any apprenticeship, in return for their services and time doing what their master needs, they are taught more than they would learn back home from their less learned magic users and eventually be taught some more advanced spells. This relationship advances as apprenticeships would in any other profession and in just as many possible paths. This is all in the area of Delfraca. It is rumored that among the barbarian tribes to the west of the moutains, those with the gift are raised until adulthood at which time they must duel with the head shaman to the death or to surender. If they win, they become the new shaman, if they surrender, they have the choice of serving that shaman faithfull until their death or being banished from the tribe to seek the future elsewhere. In Graldurias to the north, it is rumored that all of the gifted are mandated to leave their family and attend a magic academy until it is deemed that they are ready to graduate, any that go rogue are "cleansed" of the gift, feeling an emptiness inside of them that lasts the rest of their lives, like losing a hand.
