  1. I do weigh myself every day and sometimes twice a day. It's usually when I get out of the shower. I know that you can see big swings when you do that. You definetely weigh more at night than you do in the morning and a low reading one day can shoot back up the next. One time I put on 5 pounds in the course of a day. I have an official weekly weigh in that I chart. Everything else doesn't matter. I've been averaging about 2.3 pounds per week weight loss since I started. You can't get frustrated. It's a complex process that needs time to develop.
  2. I started at about 240 and just had to go to 38" waist pants and XXL shirts. I wasn't to happy about that which was one of my motivators to finally start losing weight instead of gaining. I've had to buy myself some new pants too. I'm back to a 36" waist but now instead of buying Levi's comfort fit (the baggiest ones they make), the relaxed fit (not nearly as baggy) fit much better. All my old 36" comfort fit pants look ridiculous on me now. Thanks
  3. I forget who originally said this but I always thought this was the super secret to getting rich: "Spend less than you make." Do you really need anything else after that?
  4. After 9 weeks of a new lifestyle, I've hit the -20 mark and actually it's been a lot easier than I thought it would be. I like fruits and veggies so eating them for snacks is not a problem. At first I dreaded getting up earlier to make myself breakfast but that is just the way it is now. Working out three times a week is going good. I can now jog on the treadmill nonstop for 40 minutes now. I could probably go longer but I don't want to be there all night. I've started picking up the pace now on the treadmill too. I do weight training also and I've been lifting more weight as I go. I have a pile of clothes on top of my dresser that I never want to wear again. It's good and bad. The good is that I'm not that big anymore. The bad is I just bought them this year and there's about $200 there that was wasted. Oh well. I've even pulled out clothes that I was to big for and now I can fit back into them. Also, I bought one of them scales that tell you your body fat percentage. I know that the number it shows you may not be all that accurate, but the number has dropped from about 33% to about 26%. It's trending in the right direction. Thanks
  5. There are a lot of older programs at my work that I have to keep up to date. Most of them are written in Microsoft QuickBasic so I use that. (We're talking decades old programs.) A few programs are C so I use Borland Turbo C++ for those which is actually my own personal copy. I bought it years ago to teach myself C. For any new programs that I have to write I just use Visual Basic.
  6. I like to play volleyball too. I've played off and on in recreation leagues for 20 years or so now. It's a sport I actually have a small amount of skill at.
  7. I'm happy to say that after about 4 weeks of changing things for the better, I'm 10 pounds lighter. (Actually, 12 pounds according to the scale this morning but I'm only claiming the 10 for now.) No more crappy snacks out of the vending machine, no more fast food lunches. No more crap, period. Along with working out 3 times a week and just trying to be more active overall. I'm a happy nerd right now. Thanks
  8. I just got out of one of my danger zones, a big pot luck lunch at work. I had one plate of food that I chose carefully and a small plate of veggies for dessert. I stared at the Reese's peanut butter bars and ho-ho cake for a couple minutes before shaking my head and leaving.
  9. Thanks for the tip Mike. This is week #1 for me so I got a ways to go. Right now I'm still working on getting the whole lifestyle changed around to make this work. I already miss grilled stuffed burritos and Reese's peanut butter cups. Mitch
  10. Hi There. I just found this web site as I start to try to get in better shape. Currently, I'm 39 years old pushing 250 pounds. I love the articles on here referencing everything to a movie or something similar. It's great. I loved the one article referencing everything to the original NES Legend of Zelda. I mention that one because I still have my NES and I have the gold plated LoZ cartridge. I guess my ultimate goals are 1) Get the weight down below 200. 2) Bench press my weight. 3) Run three miles in 20 minutes. I also have a side goal to look like Daniel Craig in Casino Royale mainly because he's similar in age to me. I liked that article too but I will admit I probably can't put the same amount of effort into it like he did. We'll have to see. Thanks
