I started on sites like Neopets and Horseland. Then, when I was probably 13, I found a website that focused on roleplay. I've been doing it ever since!

I love it mostly for the collaboration aspect, because writing a story with someone else is so magical. But I also like writing with someone who is better than I am. It pushes me to be better.

I sort of wish I had gotten into roleplay, but mine was a fanfic path... I did end up in a writing group that all beta'd for each other and it did wonders for improving my ability to write (I had almost none). ;) I wish I had the stamina to keep up with the roleplay boards, but I know I am a bit cyclical in my hobbies and the last thing I'd want to do is leave an writing partner hanging in limbo! :(

Does anyone have any preferences?

  • sci fi
  • fantasy
  • horror
  • contemporary
    • superheroes
    • mystery
    • slice of life
  • something else?

And another big question would be... Game Master? Or freeform? I find the better the average writing level of the group, the more likely freeform is to work. I've done a bunch of freeform PBPs on my other forum, and it always devolves into the same four people having tons of fun and writing so much that everyone else just sort of wanders off... but those four people are also quite a bit better at not just writing, but PLOTTING, so it's always entertaining.

I would totally be down for this!

Any genre, nice to try things. But (for me?) no research would lead to trying to bullshit it. (And success rate might vary.. :D)

Technicalities? As in:

With a game master, it has a predefined set of rules, and an universe? Like D&D?

But does freeform mean that everyone takes a turn writing a piece of a story, and then it's the next person's turn? Because if it is..

In my experience, freeform is you can essentially write anything except other people's direct characters.  That's for 'collaborative roleplaying'.  I guess 'collaborative storytelling' would be everyone taking turns to write a chunk of the story, including ALL characters.

Well, since I just saw Warcraft, I'm craving some big, fantasy epic. But I'm not much of a worldbuilder. :(

I've done two types of roleplaying. One is where you don't write the other person's character - you just write your own. These posts are generally a bit shorter, and more reactionary, because you can't write someone else's character. But they can still have some really good content. If you don't mind my linking off-site, here is an example of such style. Everyone comes in, does their own thing, interacts with others, but doesn't write them.

Lately, I've been expanding a bit. On the site I write for, there's a term called "bunnying." It means writing each others' characters. Instead of writing just our own perspective, we are each writing a chunk of the story. Here is an example of that. The story flows much better, but it can be difficult, writing someone else's creation. It is also tough to have them write yours.

I've done shared universe fan fics settings before where you could use other people's OCs, we'd do up little bios and backstories so it was easier for other people to write for them. Sort of like Thieves World, you'd get the final veto on if they wrote something wildly out of character, but for the most part we just ran with it! Made for some interesting charactor development! :)

I'd be up for this! In the past I've mostly done the "you writing your own character" type roleplay. I've noticed what Thrillho has noticed with freeform: it really only works if there are only a handful of people (I've never seen it work with more than five.) So it kind of depends on how many of us want to do this.

But I've also noticed that genre can guide whether we have a game master or free-form as well. Free-form works really well with stories where the world and exploring it is the main focus. (Fantasy, sci-fi, certain types of horror) but in stories where there is a specific goal the characters need to accomplish (mysteries, superheros, other types of horror,) a game master works better.

I love world-building! If we're doing a fantasy, would it be like Harry Potter with our world providing a base and then we stack magic, monsters and mayhem on top of that? Or more Lord of the Rings-ish where we start from scratch?

“Do you know where the wicked go after death?"
"They go to hell," was my ready and orthodox answer.
"And what is hell? Can you tell me that?"
"A pit full of fire."
"And should you like to fall into that pit, and to be burning there for ever?"
"No, sir."
"What must you do to avoid it?"
I deliberated a moment: my answer, when it did come was objectionable: "I must keep in good health and not die.”

Also, out of curiosity, did anyone else get their start doing post by post roleplaying? That's what got me hooked, but that was years ago.

I started my D&D career with a PbP Pathfinder game right here on NF, actually.  I don't know if it kickstarted me into actual writing, but it wouldn't be a stretch to say it did since my current project is loosely based on one of my D&D characters.

I'm always worried about stepping on other people's toes when it comes to world-building, but I'd certainly give it a shot.  I find four to six is the magic number for these kinds of projects, and really I don't even think you need a GM for superhero or 'mission' based stories.  Why can't the mission, the conflict, the Big Bad come out organically? Judicious use of foreshadowing by one player can lead another player to hint at something else, and a third player could toss something into our path that no-one expected but might link the first two.

I will say my PREFERRED method is 'writing everything except other people's characters', if it's going to be a character-driven story, and you can have fairly lengthy conversations fairly quickly if you throw up a few parts of one side of a conversation and allow the other person to work those quotes into their text and respond to them. I've not had much luck with fantasy, but that's mostly because I don't seem to find a lot of people who really understand what fantasy means.  I have some high hopes for this place, though. :D

Well, it can mean a LOT of things depending on the story.  There's fantasy without magic, and there's fantasy drenched with magic.  There's worlds where only a secluded few have access to magic (the power of the gods, sort of thing) and where everyone has it.  But fantasy generally has some sort of conflict not just between the characters and the society around them, or the characters and the opposing forces (usually of darkness), or the characters and the gods (using mortals as chesspieces), but quite often against the very world and setting itself.

It's really hard to describe what I mean here! Heh.  It just seems that so many fantasy settings we tried via PBEM/PBP became "Well, I have a Level 60 Fighter/Rogue, so I just cut my way through every opponent in the room."  It was like On Deadly Ground with elves... at no point were these characters in anything even remotely approaching personal physical danger, they were just exploring a world and kill-robbing their way through it.

In my head, I call this the RedSnowstorm effect after the username of the first person I saw doing this. The character was a dwarf that was 180 cm tall (yes, really. As GM, I said he got buried in snow when he tripped into a snow drift or something similar and he proclaimed that wouldn't happen since he was 180 cm tall). He was great with weapons and dwarven magic. And by the way, he also knew elvish and elvish magic. I'm pretty sure he had a magical horse too, or it wouldn't surprise me if he'd had one.

After he one-shotting not only one ghost/demon wolf and also the ghost/demon tiger in one post (which I had to say did not happen because that just was too OP even for that guy...), most of us rping decided to ignore him more or less. After a while, he got the drift and stopped replying. Mean perhaps, but we tried to explain how OP he was, and he refused to listen.

There are some people who think the fun is just crushing everything and getting loot. And another word I use for them is Munchkin after the card game that is hilarious to play but certainly not how I rp.

I often feel like the odd one out when I write with people like that. I love writing weak characters, and throwing the worst possible scenario at them. It's a lot more fun to write the struggles. But just as I prefer that, I respect people who would rather write a godly character every time. Whatever makes you happy!

Very good point. I don't have a problem with people wanting that. I only have a problem when they bring it to a game that isn't intended for that. :)

I always liked playing with epic characters, but they still struggle, perhaps more with their emotional stuff than their physical skills.

I admit to never having done anything with levels or loot. I have no idea how that would work.

The biggest problem with writing the OP characters is always how boring they are, honestly. And also you can slide into Mary Sue/Gary Stu territory really fast.
