  2. So... I'M BACK! I dropped out of the 4-week challenges and the forums as a whole in May, I think. The last big thing I wanted to do was to finish my dissertation until summer. But, yeah... That didn't happen XD. Overall, the last year was kinda janky. In particular, I gained 10kg and slowed down or stopped almost all hobbies. On the plus side though, I worked out a lot in the summer; I found out that sumo deadlifts are very good and do not worsen my back pains; I moved in with girlfriend over the last few days; my dissertation is on the brink of being finished and I plan to hand it in on January 18th; I started to work on a new project at university and I can stay there for five years. So... things move ahead, but right now I'm pretty stressed out. However, I'm in the mood to get back into making personal progress and, hence, 4-week challenges. The first challenge of 2019 will be a bit irregular. While moving my back pains got a bit worse and so I'll probably won't jump into working out with both feet. I want to go see my orthopaedist again and start things slow. Also, I /do/ have to finish off my dissertation, so until that is done at the end of January, other things will take a backseat. The overall focus of 2019 will be on losing weight again, trying to find a workout routine/program that is sustainable and building/finding "three essential" hobbies. The last part will be especially interesting: It is a concept Thomas Frank mentioned in his Info Geek Podcast. He said that everyone should have three hobbies with a different focus each. One physical one that goes beyond simply working out for fitness' sake. One entrepreneurial one in which you work on something "seriously" (that maybe can be a second career). And a skill-based one that challenges you and in which you want to improve. As I have a million different interests and I often get overwhelmed by all the choices, I want to boil them down and use Thomas Frank categories as a guideline. My physical hobby will probably be either dancing, martial arts or bouldering. My entrepreneurial one might be programming video games or drawing comics. My skill-based one will probably be playing Go or playing the guitar. To start off the year, I will focus primarily on tracking and planning. And the theme will be one of my favourite games of 2018: Octopath Traveler As all eight protagonists of Octopath Traveler have their own personal adventure, they all will give me their personal tasks. But, as in the game, there will be an overarching theme. Most tasks for these next weeks will be things I try to do daily or at least as often as possible. But some will be one-time things. As this first challenge is aimed at tracking and planning I won't have any particular goal numbers I want to achieve. Moreover, I will try to start tomorrow to take advantage of week zero. But with a Silvester party, a ton of things to wrap up in my old apartment and red tape I probably won't do much. Okay... Let's go!! Ophilia's Quest Meditating for 5 minutes. Ophilia, the Cleric, wants me to take more care of my mind. The main tool for that is meditating. I did it here and there in the past; sometimes using headspace. But during the last year I saw little pay-off and couldn't keep up the dicipline. I want to give it another try and I'll start with 5 minutes, hopefully daily. Cyrus' Quests Study something for 15 minutes. Cyrus, the Scholar, wants me to study. As mentioned above, I want to build a habit out of, potentially, learning to program and playing Go more. Moreover, I'd like to learn a language. Either Japanese -- because I love the culture -- or Polish -- because of my girlfriend. So, I will try to sit down every day for 15 minutes and study one of these two languages or C++ or Go. Tressa's Quest Reevaluate budget for 2019. Tressa, the Merchant, wants me to take care of my money. Last year I managed to save a little bit. But my girlfriend and I bought a big wardrobe and so it's significant less now. And since we want to build a future together I have to pay more attention on how I spend my money. First step, analysing by expenses from last year and adjusting my budget plan for 2019. Olberic's Quest Working out. Olberic, the Warrior, wants me to get strong. So, I'll try to work out at least three times a week, preferably six times. I will do it with varying intensity mostly depending on how I feel every day. The workouts will mostly be standard bodyweight workouts mixed with yoga. Primrose's Quest Looking into dancing classes. Primrose, the Dancer, wants me to dance. Taking dancing classes is the most likely "physical" hobby I'll start this year. So, I will look into the lessons I can get at the dancing school my girlfriend is in. And I'll research which other course her and me might want to do. Alfyn's Quest Tracking food & weight. Alfyn, the Apothecary, wants me to take care of my diet. Gaining 10 kg was tough to witness during 2018. But with the stress of my dissertation and other things it was to hard to focus properly on my diet. I have to change that and the first step is to track how much I eat. Therion's Quest Be nice to others. Therion, the Thief, wants me to be a bit more outgoing and trustful. So, I'll try to do something nice for another person. Mostly, this will mean to post in someone else's challenge thread. H'annit's Quest Morning & evening movement. H'annit, the Hunter, wants me to heal my injured back. First step, apart from getting an appointment with my orthopaedist again, is to do a little movment routine every morning and ever night. Right now I already do a 5 minutes routine every morning. But I want to expand it a bit and also do it at night. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well... Many small things to do. Let's see how much I can do. No stress, no big performance goals. Mainly observation and evaluation. Let's start strong!

  4. Right now I'm listening to the audiobook of Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. He explains where the difference between fast, intuitive answers and reactions and slow, meticulous ones come from and how to train your brain to make less mistakes.

  6. At this point... maybe an 80/20 split...? Actually it's lowering bodyfat, but I should keep my weight in check in order to still fit into my clothes... The challenge starts in July, but the forums are already up: New challenge... I know!! I guess...
  7. Probably in the next challenge. I think audiobooks should be worth less, challenge-wise, as they can be done much easier. E.g. while walking or doing laundry. Well, on Friday I had another group of students on the same topic. Wasn't much better. Some things went well, some went awefully wrong. But, after all, I'm an all-or-nothing guy... Hiruma's Quest: Made quite some progress an my dissertation, I guess. I finished two out of seven chapters; minus pictures which I'll add only at the end. One chapter will probably be cut or its content will be spread among the other parts. And two other chapters stand more or less in my mind. Haven't collected the data for my analyses yet... Had some new ideas on the design of the "study" I want to do and I'll try to finish this software today or tomorrow. Last week was this big job fair here at my university I wanted to go to. But I was swamped with work and mentally overloaded by other things, too. Apart from that, this fair is aimed mostly at engineers anyway. But every other day I search for job offers and collect them in a .txt-file to get a sense for the different fields I might end up working in. Apart from that I decided I should get back into C++ and add a focus on Unreal Engine 4 to beef up my curriculum vitae. Overall, I "should" have done more, but I guess Hiruma would be proud... Olivers' Quest: I'm still having some minor back problems every other day, but overall I feel pretty good. Can't remember when I was ever this active and fit. Working out three times week went pretty well. But I guess I'd be happier I managed to do Yoga more often. Maybe I need to build a shorter routine that I can do on more stressful days. But I feel my performance increasing, which is great. I went running quite often and I last time I managed 4.16 kn in 27'37''. More importantly, I can run for half an hour with a heart rate below 150 without having to slow down to walking. Except for hills... Stupid hills! Always getting in the way of things! Anyway, the 5 km charity run at the end of July can come! Overall, I walked 317434 steps during thsi challenge, which means an average of 9070 per day. Very good! but now I'll try to push this average above 10000. What helped a lot was Pokémon GO and here's my ID for anyone interested: 6316 2970 3556. I didn't went bouldering and playing catch or did anything else that would qualify as "purposeful" movement. I hope things will get better after my dissertation. But seeing how my back gets better and my stamina improves, I think I'll look into bouldering or martial arts again/more in autumn. Overall, Oliver would be proud... Iroh's Quest: With my weight increasing and my bodyfat decreasing I'm very confused... I think I stuck to "two servings of starchy carbs" more often than I tracked, but overall it was a real struggle. Especially after Steve's e-mail about keto for beginners: I switched my food tracking app from net carbs to total carbs and got punched in the face by the results. Vegetables and dairy contain so much carbs, I have no idea how people on keto stay below 20 grams of net carbs. Skipping breakfast on the weekend is super easy and then I usually manage to even work out before having breakfast around noon. During the week, at work, breakfast is way too tempting. I should focus more on protein and vegetables, to keep the negative effects in check. Mindful eating is nigh impossible. Too much hunger... My... err... "conjecture" is that it comes from my increased workout schedule and the consequential muscle growth. Well, at least that's what I'm hoping. For the next challenge I need to find something that works. Even though it is a challenge, I don't want my diet to be challenging: As it is the most important thing, health-wise, I should be as easy to maintain as possible. Overall, Iroh would be just as confused as I am... Mipha's Quest: Well... My hobbies have to take a back seat right now... Practising the guitar stopped right then when I was able to play the new song I'm practising reasonably well. So, maybe I need a new one to learn to keep me motivated. Reading goes well as long as it's fiction. When it comes to science, popular science or self-improvement book, I lean heavily towards audiobooks. In general, audiobooks are much more viable at the moment because of my walking, my running and my time spending on the underground grinding on RPGs. That brings us to video games... I finally finished Battle Chasers: Nightwar and I very proudly mangaged to not dive in the New Game +. But due to Nintendo's weird publishing schedule synced to E3 I have... Xenoblade 2 Challenge Mode, which is much more challenging than I thought... the Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion... Hollow Knight... and Fortnite waiting on my Switch. And Mario Tennis Aces is in my P.O. box; but I hope I can play that together with my girlfriend. Just like Pode... *sigh*... It feels like Nintendo actively tries to sabotage my disseration and everything else in my life. And there's Octopath Traveler coming in three weeks which will definitely be my game of the year. So... Next challenge I'll probably count big, story-driven, and/or single-player video games as... I don't know... 2/5 of a book? And an audiobook as 4/5 of a book? And a real book as 1 book... And then I aim for two or three books in total? Maybe... Or I focus on my dissertation and ignore hobbies all together... Hm... Overall, Mipha would be a bit disappointed... ------------------------- So... I think I should put more focus on my disseration and on my diet.... I don't know whether we'll have new forums for the next challenge during the summer break. But I guess I'll try to do no challenge the next month or two. Or at least a very shalow one in order to simply focus on my disseration. More effort on less things!
  8. I hope you realise I was (semi-)joking... Do I need to use more smilies...? Do you track how much you're over your threshold? For me it's usually like rope jumping: way under oder way over. Very good!! Do you have healthy alternatives you go to when you want to snack on something?

  14. Thank you all!! I'm pretty satisfied with the progress. But, of course, as long as I'm not finished I will always feel a bit discontent. Yeah... It got worse and weirder the last days: My weight increased a bit, but my body fat percentage start to drop fast. Maybe my scale is broken...? Anyway, I need more data!! I probably should start tracking calories again... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The last few days had been super busy. I had to give a lecture on Monday and will have to next Monday, too. I also had to write two video scripts/screenplays for a video project at our education department. And there are a few other things to do for work. And the public transportation here in Munich actively tries to annoy me... Hence, nothing done for the challenge...   15. I don't do the correctives -- at least not exactly the ones from the book. Katy has some free online recourses; there's Google and YouTube if you know the name of the exercise; I know most of the exercises from Yoga courses and from physical therapy. Move Your DNA got a new edition last year which expanded a lot on the first one. It's a free update for audiobook owners, but I guess I'll double dip and get it physical. Maybe as a birthday present for myself...
  16. A very quick.... Week 2 recap I focussed mostly on work and exercising this week. My weight increased, but I'm not sure whether I overate or whether I start to gain muscles. Hm... Hiruma's Quest: If I counted correctly, wrote 24 pages for my dissertation. Very good!! But now I'm at a point at which I have to do research again; i.e. pushing equations around. That might take some time... I also downloaded a job offer app for my phone and I browse through it irregularly. I find more and more potential jobs. Olivers' Quest: Working out goes very well! I should focus a bit more on Yoga more often, as I still have some back problems. But I might manage "proper" workouts three times a week regularly. Running went so well that I just registered for a 5km run at the end of July. Walking was great! Over 74000 steps last week. Iroh's Quest: As mentioned above: weight gains. Maybe I need to go back to tracking calories and macros... And mindful eating is pretty hard right now. Too much going on in my head. Mipha's Quest: I've been super lazy when it comes to practising the guitar. First of all because of my work/exercising focus. Second, I think, because I pretty much can play/sing the love song I'm working on. I "only" have to polish it, but that's not very motivating... And I'm totally obsessed with Battle Chasers: Nightwar right now. Playing story-/character-driven video games is, of course, basically indistinguishable from reading and I'm also listening to lots of audiobooks and podcasts. So... Maybe I'll just finish the game before starting the new book... ------------------------- Overall, things look good at first glance; but everything needs just a little bit more effort.
