Learning to Draw Online

Recommended Posts

Hey,

Could use some help here, Im trying to learn to draw.

So far I've mainly been drawing anime and trying to improve from that, but I'd like to improve more and also do more real life drawing.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any good free online lessons, tutorials online that has helped them in the past? :) I dont have the time (commuting)/ money to actually go to a class in my area so this would be much appreciated ^_^

Thank You! :)

Lots to explore. Thanks!

No problem. I'm still learning and I been doing it since before I could even walk. Then again most artists always have something they need to work on or learn.

Yea. I'm pretty good with cartoon type drawings, but only animals. And landscapes. Give me a human, or human like, form and I just struggle. I really want to get better at that.

I recommend starting with life drawing and plein air drawing. Simple objects at first, when you feel you can represent those in a way you are happy with, move onto more complex objects. You'll develop all the skills naturally and your own natural style that way. But online lessons and communities are great for keeping you going. I will have to check out some of those links, look very interesting! But yeah, drawing actual objects that are in front of you is the best, quickest way to learn to make lines on paper look like things. There's something about the 3d nature of the brain. I don't know. It works.

Fun fact most artists tend to struggle with drawing people. Especially hands. Damn you hands.

Just keep forcing yourself to draw them over and over. Eventually you get less bad at them.

Ugh, hands!! I hate hands! I always save them for last, lol. But glad to know that a lot of people have the same struggle. Makes me feel better!

I found this (Challenge specific) -> http://rebellion.nerdfitness.com/index.php?/topic/56369-artistic-and-creative-accountability/

But I do think it would be good to have our own drawing practice thread - I just want to think of a good name... Flexing the Muscles of Art sounds a bit over the top.

Plus where should we put it? We could try and find a well-lit table in The Pub (Off Topic) to sketch on, or maybe the Book Club would be better? Although it isn't really books.

Oh cool I would love art forum on here. Force me to be more accountable for my challenge with doing an art piece a day

I'd say Off Topic is the way to go rather than Book Club :) Though on the other hand it'd be cool if we could get our own thread up, like a ''Creative Arts'' sub forum since lots of people have writing (like me!) or drawing as challenges :) Though maybe thats just me thinking too big xD

Okay! I will start the thread soon. I'm just deciding what my daily aims are going to be.

Pencil studies... life drawings... at least 1 hour on personal projects...?

Read books?

Hit my illustration commission deadlines? Haha yeah right.

How about an hour on personal projects

I quite like that one. But I also feel the need to work on the basics more rather than jumping into full blown projects while simultaneously trying to finish comic book commissions. I think we'll all need to set our own goals, but there could be a suggested minimum time per day as art muscles are like real muscles and need work to improve.

Maybe a weekly goal is more realistic. I could say 3 hours a week as a beginning target.

I reckon we'll all need to pick our own goals, but make sure to keep track of each others as well as our own perhaps!
