Brittomart
Well, my thing is that at my current place of employment, I interviewed for a cashier, got hired as a baker, and for the past few months, I've been the marketing coordinator. My boss told me that when he hired me, he knew I had no skill sets fit for the restaurant (I'm a home cook, but I was slow in the kitchen), but with my degree and background, he definitely knew he could use me. Now it's starting to take off, but I'm still part-time, so like, I dunno. I think I'm about to start making way more money, buttttttttt it's still frustrating. I finally quit after a year of harassment by coworkers -- sticky situation, HR claimed their hands were tied -- still don't have a job, almost 6 months later... still trying to recover from having everything I tried to ignore suddenly come back to me. I did what I felt was right but man! Sucky jobs suck!!! The Dragon Reborn
By January, I am going to be certified to teach yoga. I live around Pasadena in California, and hopefully can get some positions. Also, outside of yoga, I want to publish my writings/become a creature actor/ start a fitness-nutrition-wellness company, similar to Nerd Fitness (incorporates creatures and stuff; my ultimate dream is to open up a facility that includes a multi-studio gym, self-formulated supplements, one-on-one coaching/personal training, and monthly screenings of movies XD). I am thinking of taking other trainings outside of yoga, such as personal training, nutrition, holistic health coaching, kickboxing (LOVE martial arts). In the meantime, I am doing a semi-part time job for my family's business and blogging; I hope I can make a little money off of the blog someday. 1 Quote Reality is what we dream. RedPandaOne
I was driving back from vacation one day, pulled into the parking lot and stopped myself from turning around and going back home. My hands had already started the turn. The problem I'm running into is that everything I want to do requires 2 year minimum of experience for entry level work, which I don't have. Um, if it's entry level shouldn't that mean you have no experience, because you're just entering? Stupid catch 22. 2 Quote "You won't find your answers by looking to the stars. jfreaksho
I'm looking, but I've decided I want to work for the government, which has a ridiculously slow hiring process. I applied to a job last June and finally got an interview in mid-December. Another place has my first interview scheduled for late February, but I applied in early August. And that's a pretty quick turnaround compared to some I've heard about. I have been finding that when it comes to non-governmental organizations, a willingness to move could get me a lot more opportunities, and talking to people is far more effective than applying online or sending resumes. I got a better response from one job fair than I did from dozens of online applications. I feel that LinkedIn has lost its edge somewhat, or maybe I just don't use it well. There isn't any good replacement for actual introductions from one person to another, but LI seems too facebooky (read: impersonal/unprofessional/... I don't know exactly, just "facebooky") to establish any real relationships. I have people from my old civilian job endorsing me for military stuff that they don't actually know anything about (which reminds me of the "like" button). I get connection requests from people whose only contact with me is through Craigslist. I'm connected to a bunch of people I barely knew at companies I haven't worked for in 5 years or more (like FB requests from random coworkers from McD's in high school who actually went to school in the next town over and you only barely knew them). That being said, I have a handful of go-to people on LI when it comes to recommendation requests and such, but it's not a tool to actually stay in touch with someone. Every time I use it to actually connect with or make a request from someone I feel like I am imposing on them. Sorry, that was really negative, but I needed to vent a bit. Things are actually going pretty well. I'm moving forward in the hiring process for three different government orgs, and will be starting grad school in a few weeks. The non-government work just doesn't interest me anymore. That being said, if anyone knows Chinese well, I could probably get you an interview with a company in Dallas and/or Vermont. Waldo
I'm looking, but I've decided I want to work for the government, which has a ridiculously slow hiring process. Not all of it, the government is definitely not a singular entity. Some jobs, agencies, and times of year are faster than others. When applying in the late summer, there is a decent shot that there will be a quick turnaround. Many summer job openings have to be filled by the end of the fiscal year. I know when our agency hires from outside, every other time its a firedrill to advertise, interview, and hire someone before the end of the fiscal year hits; the whole process is compressed into a matter of weeks. But we don't really hire anyone that isn't an unexperienced beginner; it is basically assumed that this will be your career, the experience gained from beginners work is vital for the rest of your career. Working for the gov't has its perks for sure. Obviously there isn't a lot of career advancement potential, and nothing like bonuses, partnerships, and whatnot. But there is something to be said for working 40 hrs a week, having an uber reliable job, and good benefits. In the niche I'm in, once in, noone ever leaves. It interesting to see the difference with college buddies and family in the same field that work in private industry, now that college is way in the rear view mirror. They make a good bit more $$, but work round the clock, and always have to keep looking for the next opportunity just in case. I did some networking and was told about an opening at a large, reputable company that hadn't been posted anywhere yet. I jumped on it and called the person who was hiring. It took 2 days to get in touch with her and multiple tries after that because she wouldn't answer her phone when we were scheduled for a phone interview (this happened multiple times). I did the phone interview, was told I would be sent paperwork to fill out before an in-person interview, then nothing. I called her after a week of nothing and she said there were some issues with holidays and whatnot (this was a little over a year ago) and I should be getting everything soon. I got nothing. I tried calling her for weeks and got no response. Finally, the person who first told me about the job let me know that she had left the company and the position I was going for no longer existed. That experience made me gun-shy about any hiring process that feels too drawn out, but it might be how the company operates. Stay on top of it and, if possible, talk to current employees about their experience with the hiring process. Hope it works (worked?) out!I quit my job in July, so I feel your pain. I'm in a temporary job that I feel like I'm spending all my time doing and stressing about, but I can't leave it. I need the money to pay the bills, and I can't explain a second large hole on my résumé. I just want to find a company or firm run by someone who actually has some management skills. GolfCart34
I'm getting ready to look again myself. Been in the same type of job for 8 years now at two different companies and I keep running into the same types of issues no matter where I go. They bring me in because they want me to analyze processes and make them more efficient... Only to tell me that they don't want me to change anything once I'm in the door and I end up beign a glorified administrative assistant. Either that or I constantly get "you don't know because you haven't worked here for x years." My first love is writing, but right now that won't pay the bills so I'm working to try and figure a way out that won't ruin me financially. Of course, what doesn't help is when you have to deal with depression because your job makes you miserable and sometimes don't feel motivated enough to do anything. This weekend, however, I've earmarked a bunch of time to start looking for something new. Quote GolfCart34 Twitter | FaceBook | Instagram *I'm not the type of person who is scared of something.
