How was the play?

Mixed bag, but good overall! I love love love the music, and the cast were good. The sound quality was very rough (most cast were miked and the mic’s unpredictably hissed and gave feedback or cut out entirely) so that took us out of the moment a fair bit! Oh, community theatre. My friend was great, and we ran into several other people from my choir at the same performance so that’s fun!

Friday was a crazy windy night. We didn’t lose power but many in our city and ‘hood did. 😬

oh, fancy dress ball on Saturday! It was really fun - used my anti aging mask to prep 😂 then got into my gown that hasn’t seen any action since I bought it just before the pandemic. And my favourite fluevog boots, obvs. Pre-partied at a castmate’s house, then down to the event itself which was super fun. I danced til my feet were sore, shed the boots and danced in stocking feet for a few more songs til they were sore too, then boogied over to the karaoke setup and channeled my inner Dolly Parton, my inner John Travolta, my inner Chiffons… Finally made it home before turning into a pumpkin, very smug from such a good time.

Sunday was a very full rehearsal, so i was happy not to be hungover (although my feet were still pretty sore and my knees were feeling all the dancing from the night before plus Saturday’s leg day at the gym 😭) also took baby dog to her best dog park in the morning, and video called kid 2. And sat in the sun a little big (GORGEOUS sunny day and over 20C!)  No work got done, and i didn’t make it to the gym. Well, I’ll go after arm day today.

Today … I’m gonna need a list, if not a full on training montage.

Hmm, my lists are long, but i fear that is a combination of my deluded optimism and breaking things down to the tiniest of steps so’s I can cross off more items and get that sweet dopamine hit 😂  but I picked up the listing habit from YOU sal so i fully support you getting back to list mode!

This week - lifting has been good, general activity has been great (walking, biking, dancing, water running), work productivity has been meh (largely treading water just keeping up with meetings etc while other stuff piles up ominously), and tracking food has fully fallen by the wayside.

I think I’ll focus on a smaller amount of things today, just (1) food prep so i have some high protein lunches and snacks around, (2) get as far as i can today finalizing and submitting a paper, (3) put away my laundry!! There are some other tasks too, like keep the pets alive and entertained, brush my teeth, fix dinner for me and kid 1, but I got those.

Well, it’s Saturday morning and my pets are all fed / medicated and I’m chilling with a latte and the Carolina wren who shares the property with us is singing his little lungs out. Not bad! I hope all your neighbouring birds are singing too.

Yesterday went from heavy rain in the morning to suddenly clear and fluffy white clouds in a bright blue sky in the afternoon. I took it as a sign and put the paper away & went for a little walk (which turned into a longer walk as i got messaged from our neighbourhood buy nothing group that i could pick up a shiatsu massager, but it was on the very far side of our neighbourhood!) Food was pretty good yesterday, for the first time in a long time tracked everything and did some cooking. A little progress integrating the new stats into the paper but not quite submittable yet. On the inflow side of work, got TWO new editorial assignments, bleh. As planned, i didn’t do anything to address them yesterday, but they’ll be there waiting on Monday for sure along with all the other stuff.

So yesterday’s list was just focused on a few things, and the to-do list was very terse and all broad strokes - I kind of liked the focusy part (most days my energy is drawn to a million different trivial tasks) but not the broad strokes aspect of the list… I like identifying and knocking off all the baby steps much better! The more you know…

today’s list is not yet finalized, but will include some Grease review, the usual dogwalks, a walk to the farmer’s market ISO rhubarb, maybe another walk with youngest dog to her favourite play park if we get back in time, some lifting (as yet unknown whether I’ll ride bike to campus or if i can macgyver something here using the weights i have at home), one pomodoro of paper revision just to keep things greased and groovy, one pomodoro of dissertation review for an exam coming up early next week, and fixing dinner for me and kid 1. Maybe a bath too if I get all that other stuff done!

Hubs comes home today, bringing kid 2 home from university for the summer!! Happy dance!!!

Hey hey!

The bad: it’s Monday :( of a week with tons of reading and work to do 😭 editorial stuff, reading over a PhD dissertation and a MSc proposal

the good: bright blue sky and sunshine, I slept like an absolute rock and woke up all pink cheeked and refreshed, my muscles are just the right level of sore after lifting both days this weekend (don’t worry, my coach has me on an appropriate split schedule, not working the same ones two days in a row!), Carolina wrens just belting it out, and kid 2 is home for the summer! Assuming I make it through this week I have a sorely needed hair appointment Friday, hot yoga booked for Saturday AND Sunday, and a massage booked for next week. 🤞

“Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Whew! It was a busy day but pretty productive. Got the editorial stuff done for journal B (although not half an hour later, MORE STUFF rolled in for journal A!) got PhD defence questions mostly compiled (will give it another hour or so tomorrow morning), had a quick pass over MSc proposal, fixed up some lab safety stuff, went to seminar, came home and had a quick decompress before heading back out to rehearsal. Back for the night now 😅

Food tracked for 4 days in a row now, and within goals for 2 days in a row!

Thanks for the cheering section, much needed!

Reinforcement for a couple of days of not eating like a jerk, weight is down finally!

Oof, sleepy this morning - I woke up during the night and had a hard time getting back to sleep. BUT the sky looks to be some groovy shade of pink right now, which i am hoping ushers in a bright blue sky day, and that always gives me energy. As a backup, I’m going to prep a latte, haha.

Today: PhD defence (NOT MINE, I’m just an examiner, but it will take most of the day) and lifting after that. Exams are winding down so I’m optimistic that even if I roll up to the gym at 430 pm it shouldn’t be too too crowded. I think that, plus keeping on top of essential emails that roll in, will be all I can do work wise. Bleh, tomorrow is another day of all day events! I struggle with feeling super unproductive on such days, which is true in one sense (just keeping up with the treadmill and getting no writing done or even grading), but on the other hand all the meetings are job related, it’s just the part of my job that doesn’t directly advance my own research program.

Let’s see what cool birds I can find on the way to campus! Brown thrashers and pine warblers are back, apparently, I haven’t seen ‘em but colleagues have. And fuzzy little goslings are starting to hatch all over town ❤️
