Annoying comments you hear all the time

Recommended Posts

I never understood people being like "You're really ____ for a _____", insert whatever the flark you want:

Strong/girl, smart/girl, educated/any ethnicity, polite/guy, etc etc etc.

Like, seriously? Too different of a human for a normal human trait? Yea, go sit in a corner dude.

It's worse because they think they are actually complimenting you. So they say it with a smile and expect a thank you

My reply (usually the polite/guy one) is somewhere along the lines of, "No, you just meet people who are lacking".  I would like to tell them to get better friends, but I haven't met their friends and maybe they're good people too.

Uno, Dos, Tres, pretty fly for a white guy...

And as with most songs I can't remember the rest, and don't really feel like linking it, that may ruin the absurdity of it all.

My niece and one nephew are blond hair blue eyed, the youngest is half Mexican, luckily my sister married a Puerto Rican/Mexican so it makes a little more sense.  They are siblings but adopted, my sister hasn't had kids of her own.

When they do that, I tell them they're surprisingly smart for being so old.

I'd go with, "You're not as stupid as you look. Then again, who is?"

In-laws were here this past weekend. I got several comments about how "skinny" I am and how I need to "eat more" and how I'm "too thin".

I'm skinnier (measurements) than I was the last time they saw me (at our wedding), but heavier than I was on my wedding day (WOOT MUSCLE)...

Body shaming when I'm in the middle of getting healthy just... UGH.

Oh no! :( Good you can take it with stride :)

Talking about body shaming:

It sure does suck - but remember, with compassion, that they're projecting their own issues to you,

whatever they happen to be, so they'd feel better.

Some things I can't figure out myself: any ideas?

What would be the mental equivalent to hugging whenever someone does that?

Is a mental slap in the cheek ever justified? As in, to say, "Listen to yourself! Knock that off, I don't want to listen to it! It hurts!"

As you are allowed to do that if someone harasses you physically, aren't you justified to do that to spoken insults as well?

But how to avoid causing more hurt?

Childish, but it usually works. Well, you don't have to thumb your nose.

Absolutely, you can say that. I'd probably just say "You're being rude. Stop it." If the the person continued, I'd leave, hang up, not answer the email, etc.
