Granny Nogg
Stumbled onto NF yesterday while doing research on Paleo eating. And I have so many questions. LIKE: My doctor told me to eat 90-100 grams of protein a day. OMG. How do you DO that? I'm coming to Paleo out of Low-Carb, so it's not completely Greek, but still. I look back through my food diary and 60 grams is a really good protein day for me. Now that's not to say that I've been eating clean, cuz I know I haven't. But take today for instance, day 1 of eating Paleo: 2 eggs, 4 pieces of bacon, half a bag of baby spinach, a handfull of carrots, 4 celery sticks, an ounce of pecans. And I'm stuffed. Stuffed, I tell you! And it's already midday. And all that has only gotten me... wait for it... yeah. a whopping 28 grams of protein. Holy moley. How'm I gonna get another 70 grams of protein in there!?? I gots gobs of more questions. But I'm reading. And I likes research. So I'm not just gonna sit back and have all the answers handed to me, nosirree. Okay. erm. What else to say: Right. I'm not a nerd. I'm a mom of nerds though. Does that count? Maybe I could me an honorary nerd or something. Kinda like a mom-shaped mascot. Yeah. That's the ticket. I did play a tabletop RPG once. (If you know Pratchett, my character was sorta like Nanny Ogg.) But I lasted about 2 sessions in the game. All the silliness in the pub just really was too much for my brain... HOWEVER! I did play a couple of text based MMORPGS! Hey, yeah, that's right! It was years ago, but I love storytelling so joint posts were alot of fun. Two of them were your typical fantasy heroes save the galaxy type. And the other two were Star Trek... OOPS. Just let some nerdiess leak out there, sorry about that, I'll clean up after myself... starsapart
My solution for this: 10oz plain roasted chicken breasts. And a lot of sashimi.................. Granny Nogg
OH heyyyy. Sashimi I can do. I love sushi and sashimi, and my oldest son is quite adept at making the latter. I'm sure he'd be willing to teach me. Great suggestion, thanks!! starsapart
Careful of the sushi if you're aiming paleo - I personally think a bit of rice is a good thing, but the paleo folks wouldn't agree. I also use dairy (but I think that's out for you?) to bolster my protein. Scallops are super awesome for protein purposes as well but quite expensive. Best of luck! Granny Nogg
As much as I love it, I don't usually eat much sushi-- and you're right, it's the rice. I'm stingy with my carbs! I don't think rice is off limits per se, I have to really really want to spend my carb count on it. So I save it for a cheat day/meal. Lactose is out, at least at present. Doc wants to get my gut healed before we reintroduce. I'm lactose intolerant and I've been a baaaaad girl. I know it strips the enzymes from my villi and I did it anyway, and now I'm paying the price. Same thing with gluten. And whatever else they find when they do the food sensitivities test. Paleo may end up not a choice but a necessity. But if it heals me, I'm all for it. Cheaper to pay for expensive food now than doctor bills later-- been there done that already! Thanks for the luck, appreciate it! shaeon
I don't have anything to contribute regarding diet, but welcome! I'd say anyone who played an RPG as a Nanny Ogg type - and knows who Nanny Ogg is - DEFINITELY qualifies as a nerd. Lalie Fanyarendil
First, you go get Nanny Ogg's Cookbook. Then you turn to page 37 and follow the recipe for Slumpie. If you're trying to be really strictly paleo you replace the brown ale with more beef stock. If you're me you replace it with Guinness because Guinness is magical and improves everything it comes in contact with. Then you serve the Slumpie with a mashed root veggie instead of mashed potatoes for more vitamins and stuff. Okay, so you can find similar recipes online, and I've never actually counted the protein in this, but if you like Nanny Ogg you ought to enjoy the cookbook. I throw in carrots as well for more vegetables, and I use fresh spinach instead of frozen because I think the texture comes out better. You mentioned baby spinach--just throw it straight in. Maybe more meat? Chicken? My flatmate gets bored with it quickly but I haven't yet; there's so many things you can do to it. Hey, I saw that nerdiness leak out. There's no use fighting it! Elastigirl
I love bacon, but it has more fat than protein. So, if you're aiming for more protein, half the bacon and add in some meat, or another egg. Same thing on nuts. I love them, but really they aren't very high in protein. Ditch them in favor of something with protein. 1 Quote Wisdom 22.5 Dexterity 13 Charisma 15 Strength 21 Constitution-13 "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind' Luke 10; 27 Link to comment

Granny Nogg
I'm pretty psyched. I'm on my second week of working out 6 days a week. That's HUGE. Really huge. Today I set some goals that I think are do-able: Next summer is a disc golf tournament called the Ironman. It's 100 holes of disc golf (5 courses, 20 holes each). This is not a tournament for wimps! But it's my goal. To get to that goal, I need to really push my weight training and bring that to the focus, because I need the strength and stamina buildup to be able to compete on that level. So I'm changing up my workout routine and I committed to doing challenges here on Nerd Fitness. I'll be competing in smaller tournaments along the way and I'll be able to gauge my progress through practice and charting my progress. No more fear of being that girl that was always picked last for games in P.E.! Noname123
I'm not sure if it is paleo but if you're not shy about calories to get your protein I've been using shakes. My protein powder comes in at a whopping 245 calories but packs in 41 g. of protein making the rest of my day easier for protein intake. Quote Spaz Ranger BATTLE LOG You can have results or excuses. I love protein shakes, but sadly I'm lactose intolerant. So I can do soy protein powder, but I think that's all I can have, unless there's something out there in shopping land that doesn't have whey/lactose. Sent from my Samsung S4 using Tapatalk.
