Turning the lies I tell myself into reality

Recommended Posts

Good mooooorning Nerd Fitness!

It's nice to meet you! I've followed the site for some time, but never ventured into the community section until recently. You seem like the type of beautiful, motivated, strong community that I'd love to be a part of, and I definitely need some accountability in my life. Your posts are inspiring and your progress is exciting. I want to be one of you!

I was a gymnast for twelve years, a diver for four, and a devotee of my college rec center. In the past few years though, I lapsed. I quit. I let myself get soft. If I ran into 13 year-old-me right now, she would completely kick my ass.

I've lied to myself for years about how fast and far I can run, how strong I am, and how much work I've really done, but it's time to stare those lies in the face -- to acknowledge my weaknesses and aspire to achieve beyond them.

Recently, I've started working my way back into fitness, but I want to kick it up a notch. I found a community gymnastics program and have been going once a week (mostly due to money and time constraints), but I want to supplement that with conditioning, strength work, and aerobic endurance work. Eventually, I want to join their Saturday recreational team after I hit some skill goals + general strength goals. I am incredibly excited about gymnastics and more motivated than I've been in some time.

I have a tricep injury right now, but I also intend to begin Starting Strength when I am confidently healed.

Right now my biggest problem will be maintaining motivation -- naps are my biggest weakness -- and holding myself back from Too Much Too Soon. I hope you don't mind if I lean on you guys to help keep me on track.

Welcome Raptron! The body has a funny way of stopping us from doing too much too soon - you can do it the easy way or the hard way :D I've also found that our muscles remember and you may be able to get fit faster than you think.

Naps are awesome. Use them wisely.

Good luck!

Muscles DO remember. It's insane. My first night back to gymnastics after over TEN YEARS I was able to do way more than I expected. Obviously my body protested for at least a week, but I'm still amazed at what it let me do.

It seems that you did have motivation (you went, your muscles ache but you still feel like going again!)

I wish you a quick and good recovery from your injury and welcome to the community!

Thank you! I have to skip gymnastics today because of the tri, so I am pretty grumpy. I mean, I could go, but I feel like i would probably exacerbate the injury by getting too excited and using my arm too much...

Regardless, I'm glad I've found this community. Super motivating and exciting!

Welcome! I agree that the body will let you know if you've gone too much too soon. Mine just let me know the other week I need to be more careful :) Gymnastics sounds like a super fun way to get fit. I wish you lots of luck with healing and attaining your fitness goals.
