Mamacita
Hello nerds! It's nice to "meet" you all. I'm new to this thing, and I don't really know what I'm doing, but I figured jumping in is the way to go. I'm a mom of 3 kids, and my oldest is headed to college in the fall, followed by his sister a year later. My youngest is only 9, and she and I have started hiking, rock-climbing at an indoor facility, and we've set a goal to visit all of the National Parks in the next ten years. We've been to Great Smoky Mountains and Great Sand Dunes so far, and this year we are going to hit Big Bend, Guadalupe Mountains, Carlsbad Caverns, and Hot Springs. We will also go to either Isle Royale if my oldest gets dropped off for college in Illinois, or to Biscayne and Everglades if he goes to Florida. He has to make a decision by the end of the month so I'll be able to plan better then. Anyway, with this goal of hiking and climbing with a child who will be entering her prime as I exit mine, I need to get rid of the excess weight and build strength and endurance. I'm starting with the beginner body weight routine as well as getting outside to move around three days per week. We go to the climbing gym 2-3 times per week as well. I'm cutting sugar, dairy, and any processed grains from the diet. I hope to lose 35 pounds by the time my son leaves for college. My nerdiness stems from my love of science. I was a doctor in a former life, and currently work as a medical writer. I am passionate about medical evidence. The scientific process is my favorite. I hope to be a support to some of you and look forward to the support the good nerds here will offer. Ciao. 3 Quote Link to comment
juliebarkley
Welcome! It's nice to "meet" you, too! That is an awesome goal. How many national parks are there? I'm not American, but I'm thinking a lot. Quote Challenge archive Link to comment
Mamacita
Hi! There are 59 National Parks, which is what our goal encompasses. But there are 417 "national park units." These include historic sites, seashores, forests, wetlands - lots of really cool places that just haven't been given the top designation of National Park. We'll see a number of these along the way, but we don't have a goal to hit them all. There are people who do it, though. Quote Link to comment

shadowmoonsedai
These are great goals! I just found out about the Michigan Iron Belle Trail initiative the other day, which your goals reminded me of. It doesn't actually include our only National Park, Isle Royale, but it does go through several National Forests and sounds amazing. Good luck on your journey! Ciao. Welcome! This is a very ambitious but amazing goal! I am a father of four daughters who unfortunately do not usually share my love of hiking (except for the little ones who are 5 and 6 and can't handle the big stuff yet). Let me know if I can support you in any way.
