Meniscus Surgery - anyone?

Recommended Posts

anyone ever had surgery on torn meniscus?

tell me how long it took you to get back into lifting, running, or whatever.

did you have to PT?

I luckily didn't have any/minimal meniscus damage with my acl tear.  I'm 5 months post surgery and just now starting to do weighted squats, lunges, and single leg RDLs.  Still not jogging yet, but I think that will come soon.

Meniscus damage and recovery varies greatly so its tough to say what kind of recovery you'll have.

I would also like to hear about this.

I supposedly have a small meniscus tear and at least a partially torn ACL (different knees).  I've recently re-injured the knee with the partially torn ACL and I'm pressing for MRI's in both knees, doctors just wanted me to PT after the injuries and wouldn't refer me for an MRI, which worked... for awhile.  So surgery may be in my not so distant future as well.

It's 100% not ACL and I know it's meniscus...MRI blah blah blah

My friend was back, w dr approval, to light running in 1 mos w no PT. but then I hear a yr and don't know what to think

Yep, torn meniscus here along with meniscal transplant and then ACL surgery.  If it's just a tear and they scope it you'll be walking with a cane in a week.  If they have to open it up and get more invasive you'll be down for longer.  Best advice I can give you is take your pain meds like clockwork for the first three days.  I took Thursday and Friday off had the surgery on Thursday and was back to work on Monday for my scope.  Took two weeks for the meniscal transplant.  Oh, and find a good PT and do what s/he tells you to do no matter how goofy it sounds.  Those guys are worth their weight in gold.  I told both my doctor and my PT I was a martial artist and what I wanted to be able to do when I was done.  They tailored a plan to get me back on the mat and it worked.

I may not agree with what you have to say but I will defend your right to say it to the very death.

Thanks!  I think it's just torn.  Dr didn't say anything about anything else and we are certain the ACL is not involved.

My friend walked out of the hospital and was back to work after the weekend.  Sound reasonable?  He also didn't even get an Rx or any recommendation for PT.  He was told to just do nothing but a little walking for a week, then ease back in by week 3.

I also do martial arts and really don't want to be out of commission.

I'm headed for an ultrasound on Friday (poor man's MRI), I guess if they see anything goofy then I'm off to MRI land.  Doctor's diagnosis thus far is meniscal injury - didn't specifically say tear.  I've got an Rx for physio, but I'll wait until after the ultrasound.

Boo.  Sorry to hear this.  Good luck.

My PT said mensical injury does really well w PT.

I'm off to the surgeon next week for consult.  Boo.

My advice on the marital arts aspect is that you find SOMETHING you can continue to do to keep both your mind and you body 'in the game' so to speak.  Don't risk the knee, just do some things that allow you to keep working out and keep your martial arts mind sharp.  Focus on mentally walking through your material, research some of those nagging technique questions, do light workouts that do not stress the knee such as all upper body work until your PT releases you to more strenuous activity.  GL.  if you get a scope on your knee walking on a cane inside two days is really a possibility.  Modern medicine is fantastic these days.

Wasn't knee stuff for me... foot stuff instead.   So all I can comment on is recovery process.   Like the others said, be totally honest about your expectations with your doc and PT.   Then listen to their recommendations.

I will add this.  Trust YOURSELF.   If you hear something, feel something, or get a notion something is not right.   Check it out, and double check it out until you are satisfied.

I ruptured my EHL tendon (that's the tendon that makes your big toe work) and being on an HMO had to go to a primary doc, to get a referral, to a specialist, who would refer me to this and that...  the primary care doc I got into see literally looked at my foot and said "There is no way you hurt yourself the way you described it, go home and ice it.  It will be better in a week."     (I was furious!!  I KNEW something was wrong.)   I ended up paying $200 out of pocket to see the foot and ankle specialist my teammate went to, and he looked and said, dear god no, you have a complete rupture of the tendon.

So yes, find docs/PT you trust and listen to them.    But also listen to your gut instincts too.   It's your body after all.

(As for a time frame, the tendon rupture ended up being my THIRD foot surgery on that foot in 3 years.   From day of surgery to back on the ice, it was 16 weeks for me.    I was totally NWB for the first 6.   In a walking boot for the first 8 weeks.   By 12 weeks I started therapy.   It IS a long time, but keeping your head in the game is crucial.   Find ways to keep active around the injury and you'll be fine.)

Dude.  Totally sucks.  I had a torn tendon in ankle too (and broken foot) and 3 surgeries in 3.5 years.  And yeah that totally sucks.  Sorry to hear you had that to go through.

This is, really, just a meniscus tear.  I have MRI's been going to doc, etc.  am sweating recovery at this point.

I had meniscus surgery last year after suffering a tear playing (European) football. No other damage to the knee was found.. First they wanted to take out a piece, but then the doctor noticed the meniscus could be sewn together. This made the recovery time post-surgery a bit longer (crutches for three weeks compared to one for taking it out) but is more beneficial in the long run.

I started physical therapy about two months after the surgery and continued PT for two months. Around five months after the surgery I was able to pick up serious football training again.

However, it's pretty clear that recovery times differ from person to person and degree of injury.

Hey Cline - what did the surgeon say at the consult??

hey, thanks for asking.  wow.  nerds are the best!

He said surgery.  Nothing will help with the amount of pain I'm in and the limited mobility I'm experiencing and nothing will get rid of the fluid.  *sigh*

Surgery in about 2 weeks.  am very sad.

SUCK!!  I'm sorry to hear that.  Here's hoping for a fast recovery and a better than new knee!

Do they need to take out part of the meniscus, or are they going to sew it back together?  Is it scope or more invasive?

I'm still hoping to avoid surgery, my physio thinks that once the swelling goes down the intermittent painful clicking/catching will disappear, but if it doesn't, I may be joining you under the knife later in the year.

scope.  They won't know if it's repair or trim until they are in.

Sorry to hear you are still waiting.  My understanding is that when caught early enough, healing works really well.  Dr told me there was nothing they could do for the extensive pain and swelling with mine except operate.  *sigh*

Scope is easy to recover from.  If they only have to trim up a tear you'll be good to go in no time.  if it's a repair it will depend.  Good luck!

That is also what I've heard from a number of sources, and I've done a lot of research. You'll be up and about in no time if it's just a trim!

Thanks, guys!!! I've been rather stressed. My boss said one of her professors had a big brace, crutches and took nearly 2 years to recover and yeah it was just meniscus.

The multiple year recovery is usually for meniscal transplant or if an infection sets in, so DO WHAT THE DOCTOR SAYS! lol  If it's just a tear you'll be fine in no time.
