The Minimalism Game - 30 Days to Less Stuff! [Sept. 14 - Oct. 13, 2015]

Just a shout-out to my fellow crafters out there.    I'm wondering if anyone else is having an easier time with the rest of the stuff around the house, but doesn't want to even think about going after the craft supplies:

 

Here's the list of my demons:

 

Ceramics (I have a wheel and a kiln)

fiber arts - I spin, knit, crochet, weave, felt etc... (I have 4 looms and 2 spinning wheels)

printing (linoleum, mono-printing, and gelatin printing)

leather-working

sewing (costumes, clothes, quilts)

stained glass

art journaling (which basically means every type of art supply on the planet)

paper-making

candle-making

painting

drawing

needlework

jewelry making

batik and silk painting- 

 

and those are only the things I currently like to do!  - I've got supplies for all sorts of other things I've tried over the years.  

 

I don't want to get rid of any of it, but I know I'll be a better artist if I can get rid of all the clutter and focus on the important projects....

You can do i! My raccoon brain always screams BUT WHAT IF I NEED IT?! about crafting supplies, and currently: SEE?! I TOLD YOU YOU'D NEED THOSE CROSS STICH SUPPLIES YOU KEPT FOR A DECADE WITHOUT TOUCHING - LET'S ALSO KEEP EVERY SINGLE SCRAPBOOKING SUPPLY YOU'VE EVER BOUGHT, but the trick is to just take a deep breath and Let. Shit. Go. 

 

Yes, you bought it. 

 

Yes, you might do that craft again. 

 

No, they won't quit making whatever it is. 

 

And if they do ... there are always other arts to explore! 

 

I've been through the bulk of my crafting supplies, and have fabric & paper left to do. I mostly don't wanna, but I'm going to suck it up and do it anyways.

I've gotten rid of an entire garbage bag full of trinkets. Mostly kitchen gadgets. Like that we don't have all the pieces to

And 3 old backpacks that have been upgraded

3 sleeping bags that have been upgraded a long time ago

hmmmm... sent by magic.... or fairies.... or small woodland creatures maybe? how does this thing work?

Made it to 24 items!  Man the trunk of my car looks a lot less dirty and cluttered now.  Nice.  Now need to get 20 more items for tomorrow...

339 items today - that gets me through day 37 (plus 3 items).  I'm curious to see how high I can go.   The garage is looking much better!

Day 25

 

Continuing my trek through the Closet Of Doom. Tackled 2 boxes, a bag of crap I've been meaning to toss for a year, and some random loose odds and ends

 

1 Ikea bag

3 roll-down blind things from Ikea

1 smooshed Brooklyn wall map

1 bucket

1 tie hanger

1 bent hangar

1 old and too-big pair jeans

3 bits of the DH's old Navy uniforms

1 really old bag lifesavers - back from when I quit smoking in 2009, I believe

1 business card

1 pack dead Ikea batteries

1 crazy fringe jacket I somehow ended up with from my Grandmother's estate

3 belts that are too big

1 supremely crappy cowl scarf I knitted last winter

1 empty sunglasses case

1 ancient Cliff bar

1 random cable

1 eye drops

1 fossilized purse lotion

1 ancient Lip Smackers lip gloss

Slowly starting to catch up now.

 

Day 17: assorted mismatched tupperware and lids.

Day 18: more assorted tupperware.

Day 19: old tools, excess matchbooks, and old ratchet straps from cleaning out the truck.

 

Stil got a few days to catch up on, but I'll go through my books and DVDs shortly...

25 items for here too.  Rummaged through my glove box in the car as well as got rid of a few old and busted pens in the kitchen

Day 26

 

Today's purge included half of my cookbook shelves, 1 closet item (the DH was cannibalizing the mini figs from it yesterday, or it would have gone in that pile), and 1 box of sentimental shit.

1 triptych frame that held pics of my brother

1 stack of drawings I did as a kid

1 guide for an apartment complex I lived in years ago

My mother's wallet:

     The credit cards she had

     The membership cards she had

     A phone number she'd wanted to remember

     A stack of her business cards 

                

I kept her expired license that looked like her and the renewal she had to get mid cancer treatment, where she looked like a moon pie. She did not have this license in front, instead choosing to carry her expired one as the one she saw each time she opened her wallet.

Everything is so good doing their purges!  I have 19 more items to go for me today.

My 24 for yesterday was the stack of tv-recorded VHS. Why they got moved year after year, I'll never know.

Fellow crafter here. Same affliction. Too many interests, and they all pile up. I used to love candle and soap making, especially.

 

I can't look at my crafts room just yet. I have:

• fabric
• scrapbooking paper, tack, ribbon, etc.
• painting junk
• iron-on junk
• old costumes
• unfinished projects
• beads

I miiiight do the five years worth of scrap-booking backlogged, but probably not. As said, they'll keep making supplies for it. It needs to go.

 

EDIT: Took the plunge. Small steps. 21 items purged from the sewing stuff.

And on day 27 I've hit the point where I really cannot think of anything more to throw out.

 

I went through files, drawers and for this cycle I have won. 

 

In a year's time I will go through this again, and maybe reduce further. I would love to tackle the garage, but most of that stuff belong to other people.

27 items today.  Tomorrow I hope to finally tidy up the office closet.  Been hesitating on that.

Looks like I've missed three days due to work so including today, I will be getting 106 done today! Pictures to come!

Cleaning up continues, but not reducing stuff, and I am amazed by how little stuff I have left.

28 hard fought items.  Definitely helped to clean the hubs desk.  Tomorrow will finally be the closet, maybe.

I'm doing this until the 30 days (if I can make it), but I think that if there is more clutter to get rid of that you feel needs to be done, then no reason not to keep going till the end
