Somehow, I just can't imagine Nightingale doing the jitterbug. Waltz, certainly. Tango, quite possibly. Jitterbug?

Black Bottom! He was very specifically taught the Black Bottom by a young woman named Cocoa.

Does your library have reciprocal lending agreements with any other libraries? I currently have cards from four different library systems (and know I could get at least one more if I wanted to) and sometimes one of them will have what I want when all copies are checked out in the other systems.

I have two cards, but the other doesn't get the audiobooks and only some of the book books in this series. (They don't have this one, alas.)

I'm curious now, does the video really show black bottom? I don't know much about it (and most of it is lost anyway) but I associate it with a looser, more grounded dance. Lots more hips and shoulders and bent knees. And booty/knee slapping, which definitely doesn't seem Nightingale approved. 😄 But maybe this is what it looked like when white people danced it in couples...

An interesting question, because the documentation is sparse.

If what you're thinking of is this with all the high knees and butt slapping, it appears to be not a 1920s dance, but a 1950s pastiche choreography to old-timey music:

If you're thinking this, this appears to be the actual thing:

It is showier, but the basic moves seem pretty similar, so I think the difference is a professional dancer doing a stylized solo performance for an audience, versus the casual amateur partnered version that people would do on the local dancefloor on Friday night after work.

They're also both labeled "black bottom" in contemporary 1926/7 title cards, so I think that's pretty reasonable documentary evidence for it. Title cards can be wrong, but it's two very similar dances both labeled the same, so I think there's a strong probability.

Looking at my weekly chart, I have three goals I have not met once: my bedtime, Hindu squats, and my stupid therapy writing for my stupid mental health.

So I must design partial steps.

Spoiler

Squats: a non-zero non-pass score for reviewing the progressions to identify which one I want to try. I think I'm not doing it because I'm undecided on what to try first.

Bedtime: I have water by my bed, so hydration should not stop me. I think tonight is a possibility. Unless I try to do too much. Anyway, the rule is just in bed on time, not asleep on time, so I can have a book or something. Bribery. I'm so into bribery this challenge. (I'm working on a winter hibernation bedtime ritual. Magical and everything.)

Stupid therapy writing for my stupid mental health: okay, the issue here is that this takes a chunk of time and is Not Fun. It's the opposite of fun. (Okay it's mostly not too bad, but it's not on the good side of things yet.) So it also takes some privacy and uninterruptibility and whatever. Getting the block of time and the privacy at the same time is kind of the problem, although also I don't wanna. No good solutions for this yet. It'd be annoying to have to take a special trip to another location every day so I can get the uninterrupted time to do this. And again, I don't wanna. I should do more things I don't wanna for the extra practice, but still.

I could try to make it magical. Perhaps it is a binding ritual. Or something. I need to think.

185?cb=20181123215531

ETA: And I am in fact in bed on time tonight. Hooray, my first pass of the week! (On the plus side, I haven't been failing badly enough to make my sleep deficit explode. I'm muddling through on not totally terrible sleep. But it's enough to be real scheduling fails.)

What I need is to find someone who wants to do a short end of day body doubling on reviewing the day and planning the next day. I suspect that is a big help in making Good Bedtime Choices happen.

Emphatically.   I had to take several laps on Tuesday to avoid homicide, and I can recommend the treatment as effective.

I am, seven weeks after the concept was introduced in a challenge, beginning to get the hang of asking myself that question occasionally when I'm dissatisfied. (I am apparently a slow learner, and this is why Nightingale and various rivers make me repeat challenges.)

Mostly it is bribery. Pure seasonal bribery.

Well, bribery and tricks of the mind are very vampirish things to do. Vampires and Wizards may have a few things in common, I guess.

Here late but following nonetheless.

Legally bound to hug people in need.

Living life as a Druid is about walking with the beasts. It's about being scared, looking your fears in the eyes and going on anyway. Dread doesn't go away, you just learn to know it. It's still a beast, it still has fangs, but you walk among it.

This wizard has a very low tolerance for vampires. (Although, to be fair, in his world they're not charming or cultured, or even particularly sentient that we can tell, just giant black holes of life-force-sucking death that kill everything they touch, even the grass.) And you may have explained why, at least in the Doylist sense. Otherwise, they'd have far too much in common. There's only room for one functionally immortal, charming, highly cultured posh dude with a closet full of well-tailored evening wear in this series. :D

Angry Bela Lugosi GIF

Cut for unnecessary book discussion:

Spoiler

You've made me realize that he seems to take a very hard line against anything even in the vague general vicinity of vampirism, including some relatively harmless creatures and other wizards killing people to take their magical power. Murder's not a capitol crime for him, but vampirism of any sort isn't just execution, but immediate and total execution with prejudice. He treats it more like eradicating a contagion outbreak that you can't let establish itself.

I think he's okay with giving me fun vampire movies every year because they're just blood and fangs. He's cool with blood and fangs. His best friend is all blood and fangs. But absorbing the life force of another creature, he has no chill at all. He will scorch the earth where it used to stand.

Crap, I'm going to have to do the stupid therapy writing, because it's the only red dot left today.

Anyway, I've decided that the squat plan is alternating days of Matt Furey's frog-ups with GMB's first ankle/hip mobility stretch. I'm too tight to squat well.

painted my nails black in celebration of the season

Oh. Oh. I could do this. I have black.

(I'm giving up on my spring/summer green. It's a nice shade in the bottle, but it makes me look glowing pink. Like I've been boiled in radioactive water. I need to find someone with a different skin tone to give it to, and stick to the browns and blacks and navies that make me look nice and healthy.)

Today's vampire training was Discovery of Witches, following your recommendation. That is an amazing color palette, I agree, I'm super into it. (Also, I did not get the appeal of the male lead until he went deer-hunting. Then I got it. I should maybe be worried by that.)

(I keep wondering how A Certain Wizard is going to handle all the sexy vampire shows, but he just keeps sighing in a put-upon way and going, "That is clearly meant to be one of the high fae. I don't know why this got so muddled up. I blame an excess of laudanum.")

((Crikey. I just looked it up, and he's right. Bram Stoker was a laudanum addict. Ugh, it's so concerning when he is actually good at non-fictional things.))
