New Perspectives [Open Arm Balance Challenge!] From 11/18 Til We Get Bored

Recommended Posts

I posted this in my thread, but anyone can join in on this as well. 12 Days of Yoga Flows!

You start with doing the day 1 pose on the first day, then the day 2 pose + the day 1 pose on the second day, then the day 3 + day 2 + day 1 pose on the third day -- just like the song. They do not have to be directly connected, you can flow through whatever poses you like between each pose as long as you get through them in sequential order eventually. For ones with an option, you can choose between any of the options and change it up between days if you like. Feel free to modify any of the poses as well! Your pigeon can take off and fly if you like. :)

Day 1 - partridge in a pear tree: tree pose

Day 2 - two turtle doves : pigeon pose

Day 3 - three french hens: rooster pose or crosslegged sit or frog pose

Day 4 - four calling birds: crow pose or crane pose

Day 5 - five golden rings: wheel pose or table

Day 6 - six geese laying: egg tripod

Day 7 - seven swans swimming: boat pose or swan pose (hamasana)

Day 8 - eight maids milking: COW POSE

Day 9 - nine ladies dancing: dancer pose or warrior III

Day 10 - ten lords leaping: lizard pose or pose dedicated to sage koundinya II

Day 11 - eleven pipers piping: cobra pose

Day 12 - twelve drummers drumming: goddess pose

I'll make one of those cute graphics or whatever to put on instagram as well maybe?

Yes, in flying crow you rest say your right knee on the right elbow. In flying pigeon you have an additional point of contact - so you rest your right ankle on the left elbow (as well as the right knee on the right elbow). It requires a bit less strength but a bit more hip flexibility in order to externally rotate the hip.

It depends.  A lot of yoga teachers and yoga programs will use them interchangeably, both meaning the flying pigeon move with the ankle supported on the opposite arm.  Heck, I even technically have it "wrong" in my tutorial, since I'm doing flying pigeon, but call it flying crow.  ;P

Here on NF, we use the terms as Hatter described above.  At least that way, we're all on the same page.

Yeah good point, it's kind of like crow and crane, they are also very frequently interchanged. But they are different postures, both looking at their sanskrit names and the mechanics, even if it can be easy to get the names confused. Too many birds in yoga. :P So if you ever take a class or look at a tutorial it's definitely a good idea to double check what the teacher is actually doing.  :)

Reading @dragons4lessa thread, I was inspired to try to push from a headstand to a handstand. She used some bolsters to raise her head. I put some yoga blocks under my head, which enabled me to kick into the headstand-yay! Then I tried to push from a headstand into a handstand. Failed a few times. Tried again, and made it, but fell right away. A few attempts later ,and I was actually able to hold the handstand. I love stealing borrowing ideas from others threads and being inspired by them.

Wow! that sounds awesome! Can you link to the post from dragons4lessa that you are referencing? I might just have to try that when I get home :)

Yaaaa crow to press drill thing~

Surprisingly killer on the hip flexors and quads, actually. Maybe I'm over-recruiting them? I also noticed in my videos that as soon as I tried to lift my toes off my wrists, I lost all tension in the hip/butt/core, haha.

I also was able to press from headstands into forearm stand really easily (!) which is already an improvement over last month when I was playing with them. Sage II into figure 8 happened on both sides but my camera was tilted too high up so you could only see my shoulders and that does not make for a very riveting video. Tried some handstands down into crow for giggles and wound up with some really nice piked straddled holds while trying to transition down.

I also found that if I did something in crow right before I tried a handstand hold, the handstand went really well and I was 100x more likely to actually be pressing into my fingers instead of trying to find my balance further up in my body.

I love this stuff. <3

I don't think so, think you're just actively compressing. Think about when you do seated leg lifts on the floor. Either way I'm super impressed. (need to get to work, grumble, grumble)

I've noticed this too! Ok, not that the handstand goes reeeally well, but better. For me I think it's because I use my core a lot more when moving in crow, something I struggle with in handstands.

Duuuude.

I am working on getting back into this (I held crow for a few whole seconds!). I really need to get some core stuff going again so that this stuff can be a little more possible ;) I'm hoooping to do be able to post some sort of update on this stuff about once a week through my next challenge, but I'm not holding my breath :P

Definitely don't hold your breath -- yoga is all about breathing. ;)

I haven't just tried it on its own. I was planning on going just to a regular elbow lever but my weight was too far shifted to the other side so I just went with the one-armed attempts. ;)
