Whining is totally allowed and I think justified in this case, but only because it's right before a race.  It is kind of a bummer.  But I'm sure you'll totally rock it out anyway!  Good luck tomorrow!

A couple more things about the race weekend.

I got a flat on the first lap. I rode on a half-inflated tire for the first two laps. I had a pump at the pits, but when I came through the announcer shouted, "And here's Ted Frederick representing Team Awesome Sloth!!!" And everyone cheered and I got excited and forgot to pump up my tire.

The people I was pitted next to were so Wisconsin. Their crew spent the race eating cheese curds (more than one variety) and drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon.

The taco truck was Mitch from San Antonio- do you know him @Tanktimus the Encourager?  He claimed that once you get 500 miles outside of SA you can't find a good breakfast taco to save your life. Except his of course. Which were good.

After the race, since I already had a belly ache from race food, I had cheese on my tacos. It was the most glorious thing I've ever eaten.

The camper next to ours was a four-man team doing the 24 hr relay race. When I woke up they were arguing because they all had done four laps and no one would do a fifth. They decided to "fuck it and take a DNF."  I don't miss 24 hr racing.

Today I've been eating like a dickhead (doughnuts, chips, and beer for lunch).  No activity. Tomorrow I start getting ready for next year's race. I'm going to get back on the mobility train and dust off my kettlebells- if I don't, I'm worried what @Elastigirlmight do.

I think the circle for breakfast tacos is smaller than 100 miles, you're genrally okay going south, but going north it starts getting dodgy around Austin (some there wrongheadedly believe their Breakfast tacos are superior to San Antonio's, but there's no accounting for some people). I hadn't heard of Mitch but I approve of his bravado.

Well done on the ride, you are Team AwesomeSloth and you deserve more cheers than you get.

Pabst's corporate headquarters is in San Antonio. It's a tiny building in an office park here not far from where I live.

Probably something along the lines of suggesting rather strongly you start using them for purposes other than home improvement.

I've come to the conclusion that you've apparently already come to, at our age we can't afford an off-season. As @Elastigirl and you demonstrate, if you train consistently there is still room to improve.  If you bounce back and forth with it, like I always have, you just beat yourself up.  Somehow I've got to get myself to train consistently year round.

Tomorrow is a recovery day - light ride, yoga, KBs for mobility only. I'll probably do this for a couple of days.

Everyone I've ever met from San Antonio has had a certain bravado.  He didn't say anything about Austin, but he had several pointed remarks about the quality of taco you find in Dallas. Really, I've never met a taco I haven't liked.

Thanks :)

When I was a kid (70's) there were still several beer companies in Wisconsin. Most of them have disappeared, some have been bought out and/or reemerged under new ownership.  Pabst was the beer of the Wisconsin northwoods in those days. For these kids it is their grandfather's beer. They'd be dismayed and saddened to find out it was made in Texas now.

The worrying part is how strongly Elastigirl might suggest I use the KBs again for their proper purpose.

It get's better. Pabst bought out Pearl beer, and the brewery by the same name in San Antonio. When I was in between High School and College I was a gate guard (contracted, never worked directly for Pabst) at the Pearl Brewery and had to check outgoing shipments to make sure the truckers put load locks on the beer. I saw Olde English 800, Old Milwuakee, Colt .45, this hard lemonade that was actually called Hooch, and a ton of other cheap beers roll out of that place. The next summer (between Freshman and Sophomore years) I worked there again, but things were winding down. The labor was all provided by the local Teamsters Union, and management decided they were too expensive and the buildings were too old, so they began winding down operations. The brewery today has been converted into a Hipster Community, with over priced apartments, artisinal shops and farmers markets. Pabst now contracts with the Miller plant in Fort Worth to make all their cheap crap.

I just looked them up, and while there is still a Pabst office in San Antonio, the Wikipedia article claims the real headquarters is in L.A. Things might have changed since I worked at the Pearl.

From the Article:

Spoiler

Pabst Blue Ribbon[edit]

Main article: Pabst Blue Ribbon

Pabst Blue Ribbon, also known as "PBR", is the namesake of the Pabst Brewing Company products. Originally called "Best Select," and then "Pabst Select," the current name came from the blue ribbons that were tied around the bottle neck, a practice that ran from 1882 until 1916, discontinued due to a silk shortage during World War I. It was once again tied around the bottles after prohibition from 1933 until 1950.

Jacob Best[edit]

"Jacob Best Pilsner" is a pale lager named after Pabst's founder, Jacob Best.

Ballantine[edit]

"Ballantine IPA" relaunched in August 2014 after nearly 20 years off the market. This is Pabst's foray into the craft beer scene.[29] Ballantine's flagship beer, "Ballantine XXX Ale," has remained on the market since the prohibition ended. Ballantine Brewery was acquired by Pabst in 1985 when it bought Falstaff.

Schlitz[edit]

"Schlitz" was first brewed by the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Schlitz was one of the world's top-selling beers during the first half of the 20th Century.[30] Pabst Brewing Company also produces four Schlitz malt liquors—Schlitz Red Bull, Schlitz Bull Ice, Schlitz High Gravity, and Schlitz Malt Liquor.[1]

Old Milwaukee[edit]

Main article: Old Milwaukee

"Old Milwaukee" is a pale lager. It was first brewed in 1890 by the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was later reintroduced in 1955 as a value priced beer.

Colt 45[edit]

Main article: Colt 45 (malt liquor)

"Colt 45" is a brand of malt liquor first produced in 1963 by the National Brewing Company in Baltimore, Maryland. Colt 45 is the namesake of running back Jerry Hill (#45 of the 1963 Baltimore Colts).

St. Ides[edit]

Main article: St. Ides

"St. Ides" is a brand of malt liquor first launched by the McKenzie River Corporation in 1987. St. Ides gained prominence during the late 1980s and early 1990s through the use of celebrity endorsements by rap artistssuch as Ice Cube, 2Pac, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Scarface, The Notorious B.I.G., and Method Man & Redman.

Stroh's[edit]

The Stroh Brewery Company in Detroit, Michigan first brewed "Stroh's beer in 1850. Stroh's is an American-style lager.

Old Style[edit]

"Old Style" was first brewed in 1902 by the G. Heileman Brewing Company in La Crosse, Wisconsin under the name Old Style Lager; it was popular in Wisconsin, the Chicago metro area, Minnesota, eastern Iowa, Lincoln, Nebraska, southwestern Michigan, Upper Michigan, and Fargo and Grand Forks, North Dakota. It has been served at Wrigley Field for many years, and is popular with fans of the Chicago Cubs. The original Heileman's Old Style brewery in La Crosse is now owned by the City Brewing Company. It brews La Crosse Lager, which is based upon the original Old Style recipe and is kräusened for 30 days. This beer may also be the basis for the brewery's nationally-distributed DB Hobbs brand.[31]

In the early 1990s, Chicago-born actor Dennis Farina made a series of commercials for Old Style beer, mentioning that it was "our great beer... and they can't have it."[32] The production of Old Style has returned to its birthplace in La Crosse, Wisconsin. In a contract with Pabst, City Brewery became the sole producer of the Old Style brand. Along with the homecoming of the beer, the brand introduced "Old Style Oktoberfest."[33]

Lone Star[edit]

"Lone Star" was first brewed by Lone Star Brewing Company in San Antonio, Texas. It was Lone Star Brewing Company's main brand and marketed as "The National Beer of Texas."

Olympia[edit]

The Olympia Brewing Company in Tumwater, Washington first brewed "Olympia" beer. Olympia is an American-style pale lager.

Rainier Beer[edit]

"Rainier Beer" was first brewed in Seattle, Washington by the Rainier Brewing Company. It is popular in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

Schmidt Beer[edit]

"Schmidt Beer" was first brewed by the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1855. It is popular throughout the Upper Midwest.

National Bohemian[edit]

Main article: National Bohemian

"National Bohemian" was the flagship beer of the National Brewing Company in Baltimore, Maryland. It is a Bohemian-style American beer. Ninety percent of National Bohemian sales are in the Baltimore area.[34]

Former brands[edit]

Andeker[edit]

Pabst introduced a premium brewed European style lager called Andeker in 1939.[35][36] After dying out in the 1960s it was brought back from 1972 to 1986, brewed from extra-rich malt, specially selected grain, and select hops, then given extra ageing - lagering in German - to develop a full, rich, smooth "continental" taste, according to its promotions.

It has been described as "The most European of the Americans, with full body and well-modulated flavor. Creamy rather than violently carbonated, sharp but not bitter."[37]

Red, White and Blue[edit]

Main article: Red White & Blue Beer

Red White & Blue was a brand of beer produced and sold by Pabst from before Prohibition until the mid-1980s. Pre-Prohibition advertisements lauded its "mellow" taste and drinkability. After years of average sales, the brand saw significant growth in the early 1980s due to creative marketing campaigns. However, Pabst reformulated it to reduce costs and by the mid-1980s it was known as a "cheap beer". Sales steeply declined and the brand was discontinued.

It'll be interesting to see what pros like Tank say but when I lived in Colordao, the best breakfast burritos were a little Mexican place called Albertos. You had to know to show up before they open and walk into the kitchen directly. They sold two kinds of burritos per day for $2 each and one was a meal for most people. They sold them in mild, medium and hot. Hot was pretty much only for people who grew up eating spicy food. Most of us gringos just ate mild or medium.

I have never been able to put my finger on why they were so good. I make them at home with eggs, onions, peppers, chorizo and so on but they just don't satisfy in the same way or tickle that exact same flavor spot. So, sadly, for me, it's an X factor that I have never successfully recreated.

I did got back last year to the exact same spot specifically to get breakfast burritos, assuming I had built it up in my mind as being better than it was. Nope. Still awesome. I still can't recreate the magic.

That place, by the way, uses a white flour tortilla, eggs, potatoes then rotates different meats in on different days, chorizo, steak, chicken. The do work their homemade salsa directly into the eggs and I'm sure that's part of the magic. Still, all the ingredients are available elsewhere. I've just never found the right process.

Simis is on Fredericksburg road, not in the City of Fredericksburg. If you are in Live Oak, try Taco Garage for a meal, and Los Balitos for Breakfast Tacos

Quality of the ingredients, how they are cooked and the tortilla.

My guess is they probably made the tortillas themselves.

To answer both of you, do not underestimate the importance of the tortilla in a breakfast taco or burrito. Many times that is the difference. It also matters what they cook the eggs and or potatoes in. If they use bacon grease, of course that helps. There is also the quality of ingredients, and never forget the salsa.

Yeah, I'll go back to Simple & Sinister, if my back will put up with it I'll increase the amount I squat and I'll add ring rows to the warm up. To become a better rider all I need to do is ride, but my aged body needs a flexibility and strength component to keep functioning after the assault of too much biking.

The Slothlings are alright, but apparently there is only so much grandmotherly love to go around.

All the beers you mentioned that I know about had a similar story. They were a decent regional beer once.  Their formula was changed in the 80's to make them cheaper to produce in order to compete with the national brands.  They tasted like cheap swill and got skunky quickly and people quit buying them. Those that survive were bought by the big guys and reintroduced.

LOL.  I guess that's one way to ensure you have an enjoyable race...

This is not.

Great job representing Team Awesome Sloth!   As usual, you had your share of adversity but persevered like a hero.

Thanks.  I'd like to have a race without adversity and see how I do.

I don't think I have ever had a breakfast taco, clearly a travesty that neeeds to be remedied :(

Is there a particular place in SA that you would recommend?

Breakfast tacos are going to be tame after your Mongolia adventure. I missed it, how long will you be back?

Wow, those are some lame people. My main complaint about relay races is I have to spend too much time sitting and not enough time running.

I've really enjoyed this discussion. I've been debating buying a couple KBs, but wondering whether I would really use them enough. Now I'm learning just how versatile they can me. (This spring I did use a dumbbell to help make gravlox).

Careful there DJ. This is starting to sound like grandma's treatment of Slothboy. From what I've read on your threads, I'm pretty sure you love all the tacos.

:) my main complaint was that my teammates never seemed to take it as seriously as me. They did 50 miles each, which is a lot and they rode through the night.  It is really hard to get back on the bike after that. Which isn't to say they weren't lame.

You definitely need kettlebells. Even if you don't use them they'll make you look hardcore just sitting there by your pull-up bar.

I will be back in the US for 2 weeks, but it will be split 5 days in SA, 5 days in SLC and 3 days in SD (I only visit US cities that start with S...)

That's what I use my barbells for (I don't think I have lifted them in months now...) but the hardcore kind of gets cancelled out by the flowers and wind chimes

If you are in Live Oak, try Taco Garage for a meal, and Los Balitos for Breakfast Tacos

And the Breakfast Taco withdrawals begin.

Sounds like you're as overdue for yoga as I am. I'm trying to figure out how the classes offered at my gym and that I can take as part of my gym membership can fit into my schedule. If I do that, you should drop in with me.

My GF cannot be allowed to see this picture or she will find new "decorative" uses for my pull-up bar.
