Today was a professional development day.  I spent most of it sitting in meetings. Right now my brain feels like there is a ball of electricity rattling around inside my skull. I don't really remember anything that I was supposed to learn after about the first hour.

As the son of a teacher and a fiance of another, I can tell you that happens to everyone at those things. Most don't make it as long as an hour.

Thansk. The dog would totally freak out if I gave her a hug, but today she came up to me so I could pet her, but the kids have been loving her up good. Taking in foster dogs really teaches the lesson that men are jerks; we haven't had a single dog that was afraid of women, but every third or fourth one is a afraid of men. I also have to wonder how weird it must be to spend the entirety of your life in a kennel and suddenly be roaming free in a house and yard. It's amazing how quickly they acclimate to a normal life.

Men who mistreat animals are jerks. Not all men. You are a speaking example of a good man. But I often wonder, if those men treat innocent animals like this, how do they treat their wife and kids?

Suddenly roaming free, must be like a dream come true, but maybe a tad scary too if their not used to it? I always think of this video:

If I put money on it, I would be its not good. Numerous studies have been done on people who mistreat animals at an early age and what they become when they grow up. None of the studies suggest pretty outcomes.

I was a bit frightened when i watched this, with all those people that close by. Having vivid memories of helping my nephew out. Bringing out the new cattle for the first time was always a bit of a adventure. They were not used to electrical barb wire, and stampeding caused the back of the pack to push the front through the wire. Nowadays they use a little sedation which calms them down right to the point they get out of the barn and just lay in the grass and have a nap, they wake up relaxed and one at a time, allowing them to calmly investigate their new patch of land. Which works much much better, a lot less stress for the calves and the farmers.

Wow, what an experience. The new way does seem much better for both the cattle and the handlers :P I just love how the video shows the animals' elation at being outside again.

Mind you, the first time my family "put me through" this experience was when i was about 4-5 years old. They gave me a stick and said stand there (i practically lived on the farm so i was used to handling cows)! Because (at that time) i was a boy who listened very good to what i was instructed, especially around the farm. So they good complete confidence in me, and i just did what was told. It was a horrific experience. The amount of uncontrolled stuff that happened frightened me to a great extend. As in nightmares for weeks, and afraid to return to the farm for a couple of weeks.

I'm over it now though.

Eish that would be intimidating and scary! The first time I was in such close contact with cattle was around 8-9yrs, when I first visited my paternal grandparents' farm. Being a city slicker I had no idea how huge cattle actually were, so I can just imagine how a 4-5yr old would feel with these animals towering above you! Of course now we have some cattle that roam our suburb's street, but even when I go for a walk, I stay on the other side of the street if we're sharing, because that is a lot of weight from one animal to be pushed around with. :P And I don't run that fast.

I have a barnyard anecdote!

When I was about 12 I had to let the geese out on my grandparents farm and those are scary birds! I opened the gate and was hustling back across the footbridge to the second gate and safety when my mum yelled from the car "run! They're coming!" I shrieked and leapt the full length of the foot bridge and scaled the gate in one go... they hadn't even left the pen and my mum nearly peed her pants laughing... so terrifying!

Also you should know Mr and I are doing the hour ride out to our friends house instead of catching the bus :D

Yeah, I get that, everyone complains.  But we hit the afternoon session and other people are able to answer questions and make coherent comments and have no flipping idea what we're even talking about because my brain just stopped taking in new information a couple hours back. It always makes me feel so stupid.

I wish. Rumor has it they serve beer at staff meetings like this in New Zealand (world's best educational system BTW).  Drinking is very taboo in American schools. If there's a happy hour we refer to it by a euphemism (book club, safety meeting).

Thanks.  Sofia has totally come around. She'll come up to me for snuggles and petting. Except when I try to feed her, if she sees me with dog food she runs, hides, and shakes uncontrollably.  She won't eat until I leave for work or go downstairs for a while.

I didn't even think of that. Waking up in a field after being sedated and spending the winter in a barn must be like dying and going to cow heaven. This isn't an American tradition.  Generally Pastured cows are pastured year round and feed-lot cows don't get to leave the feed lot until we eat them or they're rendered.

Just a general update for the week.

its been good.  I'm sleeping again. Wearing an eye-mask seems to be the trick this time. Although one night I woke up with it around my neck, my heart pounding because I swear I was being choked to death by Mrs. Sloth.  I hope that wasn't a premonition.

Ive kept up with the Yoga. I stopped the E-cises, it's just one thing too many. My back feels good after an hour or two of being awake. That is a huge improvement.  I rode the trainer twice this week for 45 minutes.

Eating is still on point. The month is over.  My system is working totally normally right now. For the month my cheats amounted to two beers, one dry cider, a box of rice crispies and a piece of fried chicken. Not too bad. I lost 5 or 6 pounds.  That wasn't the goal, but I'll take it.

I'm going to keep up the probiotics and ferments and add gluten back in. My suspicion is that it won't make a difference.  After that I go off the probiotics, I don't think that'll make a difference either.  What I think matters is that I've been super strict about dairy, sweets, and fried foods.  The other night I had some fake milk that had sugar in it (I'm still not a label reader) and I got bloaty and blah feeling. Sugar is a bigger trigger than I thought. I'm sad that I have to maintain a special-snowflake diet.

Fabulous that you got some sleep in. And all the training that is working out and food on point. Sugar is a big problem. I see my Oldest is now also getting tummy problems if he eats or drinks certain things, like fudge and apple juice. When it happened the second time a couple of weeks ago, he totally swore off both those things, and he hasn't had any since. He is better than me.

Aargh, the page lost my previous quotes about the geese and little Sofia.

Never turn your back on geese, there is a reason why some people keep them as guard geese, and it is not for their amazing ability to get rid of snails and slugs.

I too am coming to terms with breaking up with certain foods on a long term basis. It kind of sucks. I keep telling myself that the alternative (eating whatever I want and just embracing the Jabba body) sucks more. I believe it more some days than others.

My niece has been having stomach issues, and after testing her Naturopath said it was yeast overgrowth and told her to dump the sugar and take probiotics. Seems like after  several months of that you should be able to add in some sugar.

Good to hear your slothbelly experiment is going well, even if it has some sad conclusions.  I'm guessing that if you can maintain clean eating long term that you might be able to handle small portions of trigger foods infrequently.  I'm also guessing that you might get so used to not feeling like crap that you might get to a place where it's not worth it, mostly.  Clearly tater tots will always be worth it.
